More concerns today from Dr. Ernesto. They had to remove one of the pins in the fx leg. |

Bald Eagle #17-2257 [HK] update September 9, 2017 On Saturday, September 9, the veterinary team noted that the blood flow to HK's fractured right leg was not making any improvements, despite warm compresses and salt bath soaks, physical therapy, and laser therapy. The use of the eagle's left leg was unchanged. After the extensive morning treatments, Dr. Ernesto decided to check on the eagle again in the evening, and if there was no improvement, he would need to make a difficult decision. In the afternoon, no improvements were seen, but the team decided to attempt one more procedure -- a fasciotomy, to relieve the tension and pressure in the leg that had lost circulation. Sadly, HK died under anesthesia. Dr. Monica attempted CPR for several minutes, but could not revive HK. The team is saddened that, despite an all-out effort of treatment, HK's injuries were too severe to overcome. The veterinary team will perform a necropsy, to see what else they can learn about HK's injuries. |

Just so very sad to read this a few minutes ago..I had to steal this picture posted in memory of HK by Connie D. It was just so touching. "She (Ma Norfolk) was there to greet him." |

A very sad outcome Quote: Updates
November 21, 2020 After much evaluation and discussion, the veterinary team made the difficult decision to euthanize Bald Eagle NZ, #11-0474. Due to the severity of her injuries, the eagle would never be able to be released back into the wild. The eagle's right leg fracture was open and contaminated; while that leg fracture may have been surgically repairable, NZ's right-wing injury was severe. The trauma to NZ's wingtip caused all of the small, delicate bones in the end of her wing to fracture into multiple pieces; the soft tissue and bones were infected, and the bone fragments had already started to die. Dr. Karra estimates that the trauma to NZ occurred about five to seven days ago. Sadly, there is no treatment possible to salvage the dead, infected bones, which means NZ could never be returned to the wild. NZ was also very thin, with a body condition of 1/5, and a blood lead level of 0.1 ppm. The Center staff are deeply saddened by the outcome, given the history with this "rock star" patient; she was first admitted with her siblings more than nine years ago, in the spring of 2011. However, it's comforting to know that NZ has been in the wild for nine years, living her life as a wild eagle should. |

I clicked eagles to post on the Arboretum and saw NBG It brought back a flood of memories! Mom was killed by a plane - hence why NBG wont allow another nest. She left Dad with 3 young in the nest, which men took to rehab center. I remember 2 eaglets could feed themselves, and one fed little male - NH I think? I remember watching them drink out of a pan on the floor - then bathe. I'd never seen an eagle do either prior to that. They put a transmitter on one female - NZ I think I watched them track her - once to Africa! BUT . it was a glitch in the GPS! Dad mated with one of his own young and produced chicks. I remember HK too - he'd built his own nest at age 3 and had a girlfriend. I wish NBG had not omitted the nest. Freek accidents happen. Mixed memories - just like life |

Not sure if you read the previous posts, shepherd, but NZ was recently found injured and sent to the Wildlife Center of Virginia for evaluation. Due to the severity of her injuries she was euthanized. Sad indeed. It brought back a flood of memories! Mom was killed by a plane - hence why NBG wont allow another nest.
