I am already seeing eye problems with some of the finches!! Seems mighty early for that (I usually don't see infection until July or August)..I'm washing my tube feeders and bird bath daily but I don't how much good it is doing. I just put up a clean feeder and not 2 seconds after that, an infected bird went to eat, poor thing. Is there anything topical that can be put on the feeder stations (holes) that treat their eyes and/or disinfect without being harmful?

I know they gotta really be uncomfortable..they keep rubbing their little eyes on everything..

I am just reading this. had same problem thsi year, as redpolls stayed around longer. So I took all feeders down becasue of their waste in other feeders.
I am very conscience about keeping feeders clean but if neighbors are not , thye get infected there and bring ti to mine.

So they are back up and everything seems O.K. We did not have little birds for about 3 weeks but now starting to come back

A different kind or rescue and rehabilitation than we are accustomed to seeing here. Fresno firefighter Cory Kalanick is a true hero!

Thank you, Gigi. I am hoping the story I've posted below will have a happy ending. I don't work with deer, so I am not sure what is wrong with her right hoof. The video isn't very clear, but the end of her foot is swollen and her hoof has grown. Are any rehabbers familiar with this problem?

Image

This doe not only has an injury to her left hind leg, above the ankle, she also has a swollen hoof on her right leg. The injury on her left leg must be bothering her because she tries to touch it with her right hoof. When I first saw her, at least an hour before this video was recorded, the red spot on her left leg was brighter. In this video, it looks as if it has stopped bleeding.

Through our neighborhood email tree, I've asked that everyone leave them alone so they won't panic and run. Also, no feeding. It's illegal and does more harm than good. With winter approaching, their digestive systems are changing so that they can eat bark and other flora found only in the winter. Feeding them apples, or other food, will interrupt or delay the change and they could starve.

Oh, it is hard to watch her. Have you checked with Lindsey Wildlife Museum? We only work with birds where I volunteer, so I am of no help.

Great news about Teton Raptor center :sum9:

Big poo-poo project
1,000 screens sold and GTNP completed

Teton Raptor Center has now distributed over 1,000 screens and educational materials to 11 states and 6 public land agencies. These screens will be installed to prevent mortality among cavity-nesting owls and other birds that enter open vent pipes on vault toilets.

Botulism tied to soaring loon deaths in Michigan sounds alarms among wildlife experts

DETROIT — An increase in annual loon deaths from a strain of botulism is sounding alarms among wildlife officials in Michigan.

It's been common over the years for common loon deaths to hit the hundreds but the numbers reached several thousand in in 2010 and 2012, according to The Detroit News ( http://bit.ly/16eRBy3 ).

Invasive species such as mussels and gobies, and algae called Cladophora may be factors in the increased deaths, experts say.

"Before these outside factors were introduced, the number of loon deaths from botulism wasn't as bad as it is now," JoAnne C. Williams, state coordinator for Michigan Loon Watch, a volunteer organization, told the newspaper. "But they are increasing the instances and the severity of the die-offs."

Botulism thrives in the Great Lakes sediments that have low oxygen. That sediment is picked up by bottom-feeding invasive species. When larger fish and birds eat the infected fish and mussels, the botulism moves up the food chain to the loons.

Officials estimated the number of loon deaths in Michigan reached a high of 7,500 in 2007. The deaths were less than 200 each of the next two years, but climbed to 2,677 in 2010 and 3,947 in 2012.

Other migratory birds have been affected by die-offs but the deaths of loons tend to gain the most attention.

"I would say it has to do with the call of the loon," said Wendy Tater of the Michigan Audubon Society. "It's really kind of ... a lot of people describe it as haunting. It travels over several miles.

"There's something about being out in the wilderness and hearing it that's just very special."

Determining where loons are exposed to botulism is difficult because of the vastness of the Great Lakes, said David Blehert of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Wildlife Health Center in Wisconsin. But scientists need to do that to help figure out a solution.

"If we can identify the places and the situations where (where botulism is transmitted), then it may be possible for us to go in and manipulate the conditions there," Blehert said.

Thank you for this DEF and all the links I sure hope this will help, my kids won't take me to the zoo or anywhere there are animalsm that aren't injured. I embarrass them with all my loud talking.
The way I look at this kind of thing is, if its injured and can't survive on its own then capture and help, but not just for making money, and I have said this same thing VERY LOUDLY in public with kids and grandkids,to the point they run away from me, I heard my grandson tell his sister lets get outta here she's ready to blow. Thats when I figured out I have a big mouth. :teehee: I may not be able to get to most protest places, but put a petition in front of me and I'll sign and make sure others see it.
WRONG WRONG WRONG
