Short note - I was downtown this morning watching for our girl Spirit - still in shock about Swoop - I could not even bring myself to walk over to where she landed.

I watched Spirit sit in the same spot on the ledge for just about 2 hours and then I went to work. I never did see either Scout nor Trooper but heard lots of screaming for a very shot time so I must just have missed Scout. I did speak with a grounds person who asked about Swoop and commented on Spirit's landing on the statehouse grounds. He said that he sees Scout flying and is very impressed that she can fly for so far without even flapping a wing. He was a nice guy.

I will be back down this afternoon/evening It is very cool this morning, I was actually a little chilled with the cool breeze but in the sun it was nice.

Did anyone get a video of Swoop falling?

thanks for our report Rosekk.

I had just left and then she fell. I do not think anyone else knew she had gone. But maybe someone had cam running.

It is a difficult day today, that is for sure. Having trouble concentrating myself.

Dress warm Rosekk.

That was hard to watch, but at least we know now how it happened. Thanks beans and Queenie. I was surprised Scout did not go right after her. It is sad that Swoop's instinct did not kick in in time to get her wings underneath her. She was not ready to go. :sosad

FYI: Queenie posted on the Hancock forum that the slip occurred at 1:44 p.m.

I had been watching ALL morning since 7:00 a.m. but had to leave at 1:30 for a dr. appt. Maybe it was better that I didn't see it live or I might be in the hospital with a heart attack.

Here's our girl running down the ledge again (although what I was trying to capture was her tap tap tapping her right foot. She's been doing that a lot today. Don't know if it has anything to do with the limp, but anyway I missed that part.)

I am so very sorry about the sudden loss of Swoop. Poor little girl - she didn't have a chance to learn to fly.

There have been so many very sad losses already this year.

The Columbus Dispatch has a short article on the loss of Swoop:

Young Rhodes Tower falcon dies as it tries first flight

Monday, June 28, 2010 02:48 PM

One of two young peregrine falcons hatched this spring atop the Rhodes Tower died this afternoon in its first flight, witnesses said.

The 5-week-old bird hit the sidewalk in front of the state building after falling off a ledge on the 41st floor around 2 p.m.

"It just fell down. It wasn't even flapping its wings," said Dave Stephens, who works in the building. "That's a shame to see one of them die."

Sidewalk food vendor Lui Boskovski said building maintenance workers put the falcon in a cardboard box before state wildlife officials put it in a pet carrier and took the bird inside the building.

Wildlife officials couldn't immediately be reached for comment. The juvenile birds are pretty much full grown and had been expected to attempt to leave their perch any day now.

It's clear to me that all of you are excellent candidates for wildlife rehabilitation training. Your love and RESPECT for wildlife comes through in your posts. When one nurses a bird through his injuries and later releases him back to the wild, one's heart is full of joy! And raising orphaned baby birds (and other wildlife babies) is very satisfying, too. But I warn you: doing this work will change your life completely and you will look at wildlife in a new way. You may even become a bit radical about saving wildlife habitats and wetlands...

:loveheart:

Just checking back in...and thanks for the pics and coverage this afternoon...and thanks Beans for posting Queenie's video...but after reading everyone's comments, I don't think I'll be able to watch it...at least not yet.

Edit: thankfully, the video is blocked here at work, but hope its ok that I sent the link on to Donna, with full credit to Queenie, of course..

Maybe that was a blessing that you missed it...Even though I want to know what happened, I'm glad I didn't see it live..

Trooper just made a food drop, Scout landed within 2 seconds, snatched it and took off. Spirit was standing there watching and commenting about it.

Edit: At 6:38 p.m. the prepared meal was delivered back to the ledge for Spirit. With this big meal at this hour, I highly doubt Spirit is going anywhere tonight. But tomorrow morning early -- look out.

I am going to try to post my pictures here as soon as I set up my KittyWalk for the kitties - I was downtown at 6:15 pm and saw Trooper on the ledge next to the nest ledge - I got a few pictures of him so I hope they came out ok

I hope to be back in about 30 minutes

I watched the video of Swoop - I wanted to yell out - don't go near the edge!!

Thanks rosekk17...I hope you have luck getting your pics uploaded...can't wait to see them..

I still haven't watched the video..and after reading more comments about it, I don't think I will...I'm gonna try and remember Swoop as she was the other night during the thunder storm...she was so cute trying to stay dry in the nest box..

Here is a not-so- early morning report. Spirit on the ledge, too close for comfort. Scout and Trooper bring food, give to Spirit. Spirit is screaming, can't seem to disengage the prey from left foot. Somehow it is stuck. My guess after watching this is that her ability to grip and ungrip is not working. This is very disturbing to watch and I have to go to work.
