I finally went downtown to check on the family Friday morning from 8:30 to 9:45. It was very quiet on the square, where I eventually found one fledge on a sign. Walked all around, only to find workmen on the roof directly above the nest box. Needless to say, there weren't going to be any falcons on that building. When I came back around to the square at 9:15, there were two more falcons on the sign. I think it was both parents, but at least one was a parent. There was a little screaming from the kid(s), but very quiet and no flying in the area.

I went downtown last night from 6:45 to 8:00. It was actually 94 degrees at 7:00...yuk!!
It was definitely feeding time. When I got there, I saw only the female juvie on top of McGuire Woods. Glad to see her, and she is a very big girl!! One of the parents flew in, got her screaming, but then went onto the roof out of sight. I walked around the building to see if I could find one on the other side. No luck. When I came back around to the front, I watched for about 20 minutes. The juvie had her back to me looking at whatever was going on with the parent on the roof, but very calm and no screaming, so I'm sure it was not dinner. Then the other parent flew around from the north, and was quickly tailed by the big girl and a very sleek boy. They went around the building, then back north toward the Capitol building. I went after them, but before I could get there, I could here them screaming back. Very loud, and right on the parents tail, weaving in between the buildings. The parent disappeared, and the girl returned to her spot on the roof. She was still acting like a baby, hanging over the side of the building. The boy eventually headed in beautiful flight toward the river. I assume going to try out his hunting skills...didn't see him again. I have not seen the 3 juvies together in my trips this last week.

Here are the pics:

I haven't been able to follow these guys this season, but now with more time available, I'm enjoying your pics and reports, obxbarb.

NEW PAIR OF FALCONS WITH TWO CHICKS IN LANCASTER, PA.

ADULT FEMALE FROM RICHMOND VA!

http://articles.lancasteronline.com/local/4/268214

From leg bands, it was determined the mother of the chicks is 4 years old and was hatched on a Richmond, Va., skyscraper. She was relocated to a cliff on a mountaintop in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park before finding her way to Lancaster County.

Thanks Reenie...that is awesome news!! It appears that she has inherited some of her mom's bad luck, but also determination to get a successful brood. I sent your article to Libby and Steve. Both knew about her being there. Her band ID is black/green 10/V. They were both glad to read the nice update, as I was. We don't hear about too many of the local falcons making their way to other nesting locations, although both of the Cobb falcons are local, first time parents too! Really happy to hear they are putting a net under the bridge given the difficulties with bridge falcons. I wonder if they installed a nest box....

Here is a link to pictures of the Lancaster falcons, including the mother who hatched in Richmond:

Hey, Barb, do you want to do another fledge watch? There is one being set up for these babies:

Thanks for the updates from Lancaster. Boy, I sure hope there are some people there. Once they fledge they should be ok. Its just getting off the bridge and finding a safe place to land. Hopefully there are buildings close by. The pictures of the female are beautiful...she has that gorgeous white chest like her mom. Please keep me up to date when things start going.

On a side note, I've been reading in our daily bird report that the falcon family here has been poaching nightly on a large roost of purple martins downtown. The purple martins have a big following nightly, and I'm not so sure they are happy about the whole thing. I need to go down this weekend and check it out.

Steve has updated the blog. We are going downtown tonight to check out the purple martin roost, and hopefully see the raiding falcons. I'll take the camera.
