And coming over the bridge that crosses the Lagoon I must have counted roughly 10 of them just soaring above the water.no wing flapping just floating above the water.fishing! I thought it was odd.there were so many of them.I thought it would be odd for hawks to be doing that and seagulls flap.I couldnt stand it.but didnt wanna drive my car off the edge of the bridge either so had to watch the road.
hehehe they really are here!!!!

Heading out today to check some poles around MV to see if any others have arrived.
I will have my camera with me....just in case.Alot of nests here are on private property.
But there are some poles that I will have access to.Cross your fingers for good pix. :waveht:

Mvgirl, I hope see one, there are some sightings on Cape Cod this week. I was out checking nests yesterday and caught an osprey fishing in Woods Hole. It took him about 10 min. and 4 dives to get his fish, then he was off . I have no idea where his nest is, he may be from this area, or on his way farther north. Ten days from now you won't have to look very hard to see an osprey

Thats great news Jazzel!!!
I went around the island today.I checked 3 poles in Edgartown, and 4 in Oak Bluffs didnt make it up island or to Tisbury.I didnt spot a single one.But I do know there was one on Moffets nest.I distinctly heard it, and saw a big bird fly off the nest.Nonne there today, but maybe out fishing as well, or it could have been one passing through.
I cant wait for them all to return.Im ready have fresh camera batteries,I wanna see babies!

I just received Rob's migration update, all good :thumbegg:

"Greetings,
Spring is officially here (felt more like it yesterday than today here in Charlotte) and at least 2 of our birds are getting close to home. Hudson's about 2 days out (weather permitting) and Mr. Hannah is moving through the southeast. New maps for both of them are posted. Hudson's are particularly interesting: http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/Bierregaard/migration10.htm
Ozzie's getting the slug-of-the-year award, still down in Cuba.
As I get the new 2010 pages going, I'm sure there will be a bunch of links that don't work. Please let me know if there are bugs I should take care of, including tpyos (;-))."

Maybe this latest storm rolling in from the south to north has pushed them forward a bit.
I want birds!!!! :girlluv:

More likely they are trying to keep dry. Rain and wind is bad for fishing, and wet feathers are bad for flying. They'll get here, it's still early. We do have some nests with ospreys already, no one overdue yet :thumbegg:

Update from Rob

"There's much anticipation of Hudson's arrival at the Westport River. Someone just emailed, eager for news, saying they were waiting with "baited" breath. Does this entail eating pickled herring and breathing near the nest?

Bad puns aside, this morning Hudson was near the Hudson River. This was at 07:00. I'm not sure what the weather is like up there in New England this morning, but if it's not too nasty, I expect Hudson to make it home today. He's got about 180 miles to go. That should be 7 hours of flying. I'd start looking for him around 3PM today.

While that's good news, something's wrong with Ozzie or his transmitter. He was still in Cuba as of the 20th, and we didn't have any good locations on the 21st."

The count down is on...
Once again I'm late getting the data in - though this week it was
because the satellite wouldn't let me connect to it to download the data.
Don't know what was wrong because it worked today, so sorry for keeping
you all waiting.
Rothes hasn't left Ilha de Unhocomozinho. She's moving about,
in the same area of the island. But that's all I can say about her.

Things are slightly more exciting here at Abernethy (not that knowing Rothes
is still alive and well isn't a good thing, but I have to say the anticipation of 'our'
ospreys coming back to Loch Garten is more exciting right now). With reports
coming in of ospreys seen on their way back it's only a matter of time... The new
team at LG are busy with all the preparation for the new season
(with one eye to the sky no doubt!).

There are a million and one things to do before the end of March,
goldeneye nestboxes need preparing for the coming season, signage
that gets taken down over the winter found and put back up.... The list seems never ending!

Stewart, our longest serving member of staff (34 years) is retiring at the
end of March. He was the first permanant warden at Loch Garten from the
70s when rspb first bought land there (though obviously rspb had a presence
there from the 50s, though back then the wardens were seasonal and
migrated
with the ospreys). He's seen the reserve grow from just a relatively small
area to the massive site it is now. We'd all like to wish him well, and I'm sure
the time he no longer has to spend in the office will be enjoyably spent in
the forest and wider reserve finding more species new to the reserve.

More next week - though all being well, the new osprey team will be taking
to the helm to bring you all the up to the minute (so to speak)
happenings from the nest.

Kitten, thanks for the update, maybe Rothes and Ozzie were hatched under the same star and all will be well.

I have pictures of the Woods Hole bird in its nest that I took the other day from the boat going to MV.
I will also like to let everyone know that there is one confirmed bird at Cows Bay on MV.It is a young bird I was told it is making a new nest on a pole that was inactive last year. Its close to felix neck so probably the same bird I saw on Moffets nest.Ive been asked to help monitor and record the nests on MV come April so hopefully I will have lots of info for you all about Vineyard Birds.

ps.i will bring camera :eggdance:

Amazing...how they do this :loveshow: I was very glad to see that you're going to monitor nests from the ground, you're going to learn so much. Hint... patience, pencil, paper, binoculars, and your camera if you have time... You're going to love it!!!! :thumbegg:
