Hali B. Goode

Away on Hornby Island close to an emerald bay
There stands a stately tree where eagles stay
Among the Douglas Firs and the lodgepole pines
There lives a special girl and she’s so fine
With sparkling eyes and a dark brown tail
She’s a number ten on the beauty scale.

chorus:
Go go
Go Hali go
Go
Go Hali go
Go
Go Hali go
Go
Go Hali go
Go
Hali B. Goode

She used to be a nestling with soft grey down
Now feathers have appeared – in chocolate brown
Her viewers like to watch her jumping high above
They always sigh and smile and declare their love
Crows flying by call out and say
“She’s the fairest bird we’ve seen today.”

(chorus)

Her daddy said, “Soon you will fly from here,
You’ll go far away and later reappear.”
Her mama said, “Baby, you’ll be all right,
Guided by the moon and the stars’ bright light.”
Many people hoping from miles around
To welcome back an Eagle with a snow white crown.

(chorus)

That is a riot. She was in perfect time to the music. Thanks beans, it did make me chuckle!

She fledged on July 22, and if you go back one page, you can see the video of her first flight.

July 31, 2012: We get just a glimpse of a Corvid in an Arbutus. The cam has a powerful optical zoom, which is augmented by a digital zoom. The colors in this clip are soft and beautiful and remind me of a French Impressionist painting.

Time to say farewell, but not goodbye, to the Hornby Island Eagles. Mom and Dad Hornby will return in the fall to begin restoring their nest in anticipation of eggs next spring. What a successful season! A fledged eaglet. A new camera showing us both the nest and the surrounding area.

At the end of each season, I feel a sense of sadness but also anticipation for the next season. Over the years we've learned that there can be both tragedy (death of tiny Echo and beautiful Phoenix) and exhilaration (all the eaglets that have fledged). So each season is special and nothing should be taken for granted.

Video without music, and a different ending, is here:

NB: Best to watch these videos on YouTube, using the large player window.

September 11, 2012: The cam was raised approximately 25 feet, as high as the conduit would allow. The plastic lens cover was polished for a clearer view. The nylon cover over the directional microphone was checked. This cover helps block wind blowing through the microphone. A line has been left in the tree for future climbs as necessary for maintenance and cleaning of the equipment.

December 5, 2012: The cables to the old wide angle camera in the eagle nest have frayed over time. We noticed that Mom Hornby was chewing on the cables. The owner of the camera has been notified.

The camera in Gregg's tree, provided by the Hornby Eagle Group Projects Society, was recently raised about 25 feet and now provides a better view of the nest.

Doug is not involved with the new cam. He decided to simply watch the eagles and enjoy them without the headaches of maintaining the cam and live video. However, I believe he removed the loose cable hanging from the old wide angle cam.

The large branch is delivered, followed by some beaking between the couple
