Union County: Baby is upright and dad pulled him next to the eggs.

Meanwhile in Jersey City, that baby is sort of snuggled unwillingly under mom or dad.

They will get together. They are quite close. Juliet was trying to brood baby in JC. Dad in UC looks like he might want to leave. Food delivery in JC. And it was prepped. Juliet is becoming quite the good server.

thanks for the coverage....but, I'm sorry...Union Dad is not an idiot. :girlsad3: ..I have watched Cadence smoosh the baby, step on the baby, skewer the baby with a talon on several occasions. bend the baby's neck back trying to brood (and I have never called her an idiot), but then she figures it out and does a great job ..but then so does Dad..and all is fine..I do agree that he is obsessed with those eggs, but he's not the first falcon to be like that. Cadence could remove them or kick them way out if she wanted to and hasn't...Why is Dad the bad guy at this nest?

I get that she's a special lady and we're all routing her on with her first clutch, but she's had her moments too!!

Union County: I don't think dad is the bad guy. Cadence and Dad are just new to it together. Same thing in JC. Just the same, fingers crossed for both eyases to make it.

thanks Bonnie...

both sets of parents are trying to figure this out. Each have their own quirks which are both endearing and nerve wracking at the same time!! Union Dad just seems to always get the bad wrap and I don't think that's fair...

and this is why I no longer watch Union

a falcon is a falcon. No good , no bad. they are falcons . I just do not understand this bad mouthing of one over the other. back , 10 years ago, things were much different. there just were not the challenges, as falcons were still recovering. we only watched a certain few, so did not really know that much. Pa At deMOrtel obsessed over his eggs.

At my sites, I have had to learn to go with the flow. We had a turn over of one o f my favorite falcons at WEber this year. His replacement, I watched from an egg. watched carefully from the ground, but I will never give him a free pass. He has to go on his own merits .
We have our challenges, and each falcon that comes to our nests has its own quirks. I have had my favorites, but when you monitor nests, you have to put that aside and do what is best for the nest.

This male here, is a good one in my book. We do not see what goes on beyond the nest here. He kept those eggs going. That was his job.

I also want to add, that at a good number of sites, the female does most of feeds and brooding of chicks, while they are younger. the male steps up in feeding as they get in older. Notice I am saying , at a good number of sites. As the kids get older , a lot of females do more hunting as they can being in bigger prey. So we know not of this males background., s far as who he has been nesting with, He has had 3 females this year. a lot to take in. He is not banded We cannot make assumptions. Nor should we.

I could go on and on from things at my sites, but suffice to say, just because a falcon comes from so called good genes , does not make it a great.

Well, there's no question...this has been a very emotional nest to follow...they both have, but Union the most!!

Jersey City~baby getting some alone time...but, I could hear a parent calling outside..

Union~I wish I knew what catches her attention...she wasn't upset and there were no vocals..she just walked out, looked around, then walked back in..Sound would have really helped this cam..

New pairs, even with one experienced, remain new. My 22 year old green cheek just laid an egg!! Her 19 year old cagemate of 10 years is clueless if the egg hatches. It won't I'm not into feeding baby chicks anymore. But the other pairs who raised chicks in my household were totally different. Each and every one. You just never know what to expect.

Bev, please come back. These things are never about the mods. It is only about the birds, their mates and the young that might or might not make it.

WOW Bonnie...I totally forgot you had birds!!! So no more foster mom for you?

...anyway, here are the pics from the above feed..

At first I didn't think the baby was going to get up. I really wasn't sure mom was trying to encourage it to get up...

Image

Eventually, she made several attempts at getting food into its beak with no luck...and then all of a sudden, as if a light switch had been turned on...up it came..

I couldn't stay until the end, but it had started nodding off...so, not sure how much longer it lasted.

Posted on Facebook yesterday:

It has certainly been a rough season for the peregrine falcons at the Union County nest - one of the two hatched eyas did die earlier in the week. It's unlikely the third egg from 91/BA will hatch if it does not do so by this weekend. From CWF Habitat Program Manager Ben Wurst, "before the young even fledge, they need the perfect recipe to survive and thrive. This cool, wet spring has been tough on many long time successful nests along the coast of New Jersey, who are the backbone for the state population."

At the moment, one eyas remains and CWF plans to band the chick by the end of June.
