I will sneak some reports here. Jim lets me post anything I want.
here is a video of youngster still on mission9 from Jim)
https://youtu.be/WZDIk7GbE_o

I have been given green light to share the reports . thye will be from BArbara.

last nights report
Between the workers on 201 (who were not on the roof very long) and the Millennium Tower window washers (who were there for a long time), Val was kept busy defending the territory and the young laid low. Interestingly Dan spent a lot of time sitting on the Millennium Tower on the corner right near the crane arm and cable.

Around 2:30pm Jim identified a juvenile pancaked on the far pillar of 201. Neither Roni, Scott, or I could identify the bird from the ground, so we waited. Close to 3pm Roni saw a parent and one of the young come flying over 201, over Main, over 135 Main, and around the pyramid building; this has become a route. The two birds evidently made a left turn at Spear Street, crossed Mission and landed on the Steuart Tower. This is the smaller of two similar towers with great window ledges and a good ledge around the roof. The two birds landed on the roof of the 27 story tower. Then I saw the young pancaked bird on 201 take off and take the same route to the Steuart tower. The two spent close to 4 hours on the building while the parents hunted, kept and eye on U/25, fed the young, and cleared the airspace.

One unusual sighting was Val chasing off a Great Blue Heron. As big as she is, she was dwarfed by this huge bird, but she definitely make her presence known.

Roni and Scott had to leave and Roy came for the evening. It was nearing 7pm when one of the young decided to fly from the Spear Tower, retracing his flight back around and over 135 Main. We had to watch from Mission St. and hope that he would pop out somewhere. He came out over Mission St and then circled back eventually landing back of 201 Mission on the far corner. He flew again this time landing on top of the PG&E building. Then he got a little bit out over his 'wings'. He took flight again and had some missed landings, going up along side of the new tower beh ind 201 and then on a wall of PG&E. He recovered very well, pushing off and righting himself each time. He lost a little altitude and ultimately landed on one of the planter boxes of 201.

We left him about 8:15pm when it was really to dark to see much. We did not see the second young fly, but the parents were continuing to patrol around the Steuart Tower.

It looks as though a parent is spending the night with U/25. He will be 42 days old tomorrow, so his fledge window opens.

report t from yesterday

I arrived mid-morning after U/25's fledge, to find one peregrine on highest corner of the Millennium Tower where Dan sat yesterday as the window washers worked. The tower is very high at 58 stories (201 Mission is 30 stories), making id very difficult until the bird flies or makes some awkward movement. Sure enough Dan came along and tried to land and the young began flapping and moving about, wings going in every direction. Dan fled and left the tower to the young. The Millennium has three roof levels, and the young moved down to the second level down (2-3 floors) and variously sat on the side or near the corner where it meets the taller part. It was difficult because we had to keep walking up and down the street to get a good viewing angle in order to keep track of the bird.

Mid afternoon Stefanie and I still did not have a good count but we did see some flying back and forth between 201 and the PG&E building.

< /div>
There was lots of prey brought in and they ate both on PG&E and 201 Mission.

Late afternoon things got better, but it was like trying to watch the little pea under the moving cups. Birds moved from PG&E to 201 Mission. One went flying with Val along the 135 corridor. There was some flying around PG&E. It wasn't chaotic, but just difficult to know which bird was which.

Around 7pm we went back to a good vantage point for the top of 201 (the south-east corner of Spear and Market) from where we finally saw all 5. The three young and Val were on 201 as Dan flew in from Spear (he was seen on camera on the nest ledge).

We can't know if U/25 made a second flight today. I don't recall seeing all three young on PG&E so it is more likely than not that the two older birds were the ones we saw eating on PG&E.

The parents did their best to just be quiet most of the day. Val did show off her flying skills, chasing a raven and half heartedly stooping on some prey with no success, but settled back on 201.

They are flying well and more importantly staying well above ground.

Barbara

I had posted yesterday an d for some reason it did not come up

here was from yesterday :cryinggirl:

Sad news this morning. We lost U/25 "Blue", our most recent fledge, apparently due to trauma from collision. He was found on the sidewalk outside 101 California St. He seemed to have really had his wings under him when he fledged on two days before, but must have gotten himself into a difficult situation at some point yesterday.

Thanks everyone for your dedication and watchful eyes during this fledging season. It is not uncommon to lose one or more young during this stage whille they learn to fly in the urban landscape. However, it never gets any easier and he will certainly be missed.

tuesdays report
The morning started out with the news of the death of U/25, but the day ended with two young male peregrine falcons purposefully going to roost on the safe window ledges of PG&E.

When I arrived late this afternoon, the two young males were on the roof of PG&E. Val flew in with food and the two came off of the roof to follow her to a top floor window ledge on the Main Street side of PG&E. It was fun to watch mom plucking prey, and the two young, all trying to maintain their balance on the ledge. After the meal they all flew, mom disappeared, one young ended up on top of PG&E, one ended up on the top of Spear Tower, and Dan was on a window ledge on the Main Street facing side of Spear Tower.

Luckily there were four of us watching so we could separate to view the action from different angles.

About 6:30pm, the one on top of PG&E decided to fly and took a long flight arou nd the Millennium Tower. He was gone for quite a while and probably landed on one of the other buildings. When he finally returned he was carrying something. He was headed toward the top of PG&E when he dropped what he was carrying. It was quite heavy and came down quite quickly. The only thing we can think of is that it landed on the top of the Muni bus that was parked at the corner; we could not find anything on the ground.

Around 7:30pm the one on top of Spear flew and landed on the PG&E window ledge where he had been fed earlier in the day. He headed to the interior corner and tucked himself in for the night.

About 8:00pm the other one flew off of the PG&E roof and landed two windows over from his brother. He too headed to the left corner to roost, but changed his mind and walked the ledge to the right corner.

We stayed for another 1/2 hour and no one flew.

Thank you Carolyn. This is sad. We all followed him as he was the youngest--did he get enough food, etc. Rest in peace, but he did get to feel the air underneath his wings. :sorrow:

her e is yesterdays report

Not much new today. The biggest action was caught by Jim on camera when the young flew at Val who was sitting on the nest ledge. Before he could land on her, she took off and went to sit on 201.

The young one flew out and around the pyramid building and when I found them again, they were on top of PG&E.

Stef, Roy, and I saw one fly toward Spear and we walked down to the Embarcadero to look at the many landings on Spear and Steuart towers. We found Dan on the lower Steuart plucking prey and Val flying overhead. We could look back and see the young on top of PG&E.

One stayed on PG&E and we lost track of the other. Close to 8pm we saw Dan stoop toward Market Street and the one on top of PG&E flew down to a window ledge on the Main Street side just like last night and tuck himself into a corner. About 15 minutes later the second one came from the 201 side of the street and f ound himself a window ledge close to this brother and tucked into a corner. Then Val came along and she too tucked into a corner. Dan likes Spear tower and may be roosting there.

an update from BArb

Ahead of three incoming storms I arrived at Main and Mission around 5pm and ultimately found three birds, Dan and the 2 young ones, on the Steuart tower. This is a change from the past when Spear tower was the usual tower for the birds. I couldn't find Val and decided to relocate to the Embarcadero to watch from out by the pier. Roy arrived and was by the bocci courts when all of a sudden we had all four birds in the air. I think the young thought food was being brought in by Val and that got everyone flying. They resettled themselves on Spear and Steuart and Roy found Dan's new hunting platform.

Embarcadero 4 is a large multi-tiered building that has lights mounted so that they outline the building during the holiday season. The ones on top of the tiers are left in place. The vertical lights that run down the corners of the building are removed. What is left are what look like rods that jut out from the building and are mounted eve ry 10-15 floors. Dan was perched on one of the rods. Had Roy not seem him land, I'm not sure we would have found him there. Once were new where he was we could see him without binoculars.

There are three parks in the area with lots of trees and birds and Dan is actively hunting this area. He did one stoop but came up without any prey and returned to a lower perch.

While we were there we saw some very nice flying - no one is going to fall out of the sky. Val and one of the young took off and we found the young one on top of the Millennium tower and Val on 201 Mission.

The other young one also flew toward the park area but came back to Steuart and stayed close to Dan.

Eventually everyone returned to Spear and Steuart and we left them around 7:30pm.

We will be back after the storms pass through.

Barbara
