Great pictures, Ethel. I missed the beginning of that feeding. The chicks were huddled so close together it was hard to tell who got what.

You're right about the chicks being huddled in a pile, making it hard to see which ones were getting fed. And I did miss the shot of the day: Red Girl was reaching over the chicks to feed a chick in the back and almost fell on top of all of them. She had to quickly spread her wings to right herself!

It looked like three of the chicks were stuffed and withdrew from competition and the last two heads in the air got a couple more mouthfuls apiece before Red Girl flew away with the stripped remains.

She's back covering them now.

Yes, I saw Red Girl do that giant wing flash to avoid falling into the pile a couple times today. I don't know how to post pictures on here, unfortunately.

I watched a bit of that feed where she lost her balance, too, & I also felt that they were so close together I couldn't really tell who was getting how much. I wanted to keep watching, but had plans so I couldn't. Thank goodness for the weekend & maybe some chicks will be kind to working people & hatch on the weekend (Harrisburg for example)!

Thanks for the early morning update, Carly.

OMG - Did the last egg hatch? At first, I thought an extra half-shell had worked its way into the chick and egg pile. But it looks as if there's no longer an intact last egg.

I've been wondering the same thing, Reenie. I'm hoping that Red Girl will get up soon so we can see what's under her.

We're all wondering about that eggshell. Guess we'll have to keep watching.

Oh no. It sure looks like there's a freshly hatched chick at the far right.

That egg was laid 3 days after the 5th one. 3/15/14 . So the timing is conceivable and right on!!!

I think the new one is the pink under them.
EDIT: This group does move around to let the adult feed well. I sure wish we could see.

There's a feeding going on right now, but I doubt if the newest chick (between the two chicks on the right) will get much. But then, it doesn't need much right away.

Look at the bright side! Now we'll probably worry less about number five.

True. But now we'll probably worry a whole lot more about number six!
