Well, the nest is facing straight east. so its getting the sun early, and no real hiding from it until past noon. Unfortunately i am concerned that some other issues may be at play here as well. I sure hope we made the right decision to leave that last chick in the nest. No new information on the other, but I will let you all know as soon as I do.

weber

yellow slipped to letters on july21 but then she slipped again and had a great first flight. Piffle was watching.

yesterday , yellow was in a lower spot but safe but we have had a lot of wind and rain( storm warnings for last 3 days), and so she was either fed where she was or felt , where she was was best option at the time.

we cannot do two watches but do try and take a peek at Weber, lots of interest in them there, with people in area.

red appears ot not have fledged yet but today may be the day. our weather has not been good fledging weather

*UPDATE*
We have learned that a severe infection ailed the two chicks that were removed (coccidia). One of the chicks did not survive. The other is doing quite well, and will be put back in the nest tomorrow. The plan will be to remove the substrate, disinfect the nest, replace the substrate with fresh pea gravel, get some medicine into the existing chick, and then put everyone back into a nice fresh clean nest. Piece of cake, right? (providing I don't die of dehydration after hauling 30 lbs of gravel up 10 stories worth of stairs)

OH MY...thanks so much for this update..and so sad to read that one chick did not survive...I believe this is the same parasite that infected all of the chicks at U of A last year.

I cannot believe you will be hauling up 30 lbs of pea gravel, but so thankful you will be cleaning the box, medicating the remaining chick, then returning chick #2 to the box (while video taping the entire thing, right? hahaha) Whew!!

bell july24

on sunday, in the morning our bell chick fledged. we are certain he went off on his own from middle pillar. He was out of sight at the time but he was flapping just before then. Just found out yesterday that it was a male. .

I notified Gord, and he went down there after picking up Silver. He found it in an alley and it flew off as he approached. He said it flew well and cleared the trees by Sir Winston Churchill square and should be on a roof. So fingers are crossed he does well. We have had then do well before but we have so many high rises surounding Bell. now that, if they can get to the back street, they can find nice buildings to go on. And I am sure they will call loud enough for parents.

so we will wait.

*ANOTHER UPDATE*
Only good news to report here folks.
We accomplished everything we wanted to up at the nest.
We captured the resident chick without incident, and fed him some antibiotic laced quail. We sprayed him down to get rid of the mites, THEN we gave the nest a thorough cleaning-and WOW, there was a LOT of "stuff" in that nest. I had to chisel it clean with a putty scraper!
Then we wiped down the nest with ammonia, and replaced the gravel with fresh washed pea gravel. I don't know if we will see the nest on the next episode of "Cribs" but, it sure looks better than before we spruced it up.

the two look cozy now but when our male first saw his brother again, he was scared.
later tonight, when i get back form watch I will post short video of the reaction on our males face.

now it is up to charlotte.
Glad he was fed, as it may be a bit before adults come in.

good news so far. Red took her first flight after 5pm. we were there and she looked great. Peter was watching from N of building and I was on south. They were helicoptering on north ledge and one took off and then the other. Yellow went right up to the W where food was and Red tried for East roof and missed and swung all the way around and went out S and came back up and landed roof top near nest box.( east)
red was 44 days old. so glad she waited.

I was happy they flew off together
there she stayed till after 7. we stayed till after 7pm when Trish and mike arrived. after that they both took a few more flights

Peter is home from his 6-10am shift and he aid they had some good flights.

Peter and I will both go down and be there from 2-6pm

Ahh, the glamour of care taking for peregrines.
You know you have a good job when you need a garden trowel and a putty scraper.

The cam is up on our end, and it looks like we had a quiet "first night back together" with the two chicks. They seem to happily pile up on each other and go to sleep when they are tired. Interested to see how today goes, though.
