this is so disappointing. They know when the falcons are coming back. Things should be in order way before then,.

I do not watch the cams, to just watch cute chicks. I have been doing this for years, from the ground and from cam. the cams have always helped us in our observations. Before the cams, we spent countless hours on the ground..
WE will not know when eggs have been laid, and they will have been laid before cams go on . Therefore, will not know hatch dates.

Over the years, we have been able to save eggs, if one of adults went missing, which you can tell from cams. If a fight ensued, we would go down to make sure we did not have a rescue to make.

I will be doing a lot less this year, that is for sure.

U of A may1

cam went up this morning

u of a may1

:newegg: :newegg: :newegg: :newegg:
this is anyone's guess, that is why cams being up early are important. when we know dates eggsare laid we can figure out hatch dates. Hatch dates are so important, as we can tell if there are problems early.
We saved a whole clutch at nutrien in 2016 as we knew Charlotte was not incubating as she should, the last week. we knew dates of hatch because we knew when eggs were laid from the cam. Eggs were taken out and dummies were put in , At approx hatch time she was given an older chick.
Her eggs all hatched in incubation machine, thus four young lives saved. At Bell and U o f A , we were able to rescue young chicks in trouble at hatching . or , know if problems with adults. this is because we knew when they were going to hatch.
I am going out on limb and will guesstimate here, from reports I got from Jean
They were in full incubation by at least april30 . to see 4 eggs today, it could mean egg 4 on april29 . counting 2 backwards, april 27, april25 april 23.
they were first seen copulating by at least april6. so it could be sooner.

before cams , peter and I would watch from ground and we knew what to look for and so we knew when at least second last egg was laid, . but we cannot be everywhere and are growing weary.

we know there was one egg in box at 2:45pm april16 ,as cam went up briefly. if cam had stayed up we would have seen second egg and ween third etc, . It is third egg that is important, as that is where you count from.
just assuming this is first egg , I am going to go day before and say april15, april 17 , april 19 and april21.
now my friend and I saw her picking at something in th e box that day , and it could have another egg, gone wrong. so we will never know.
this is the best I can do under circumstances. again, this is why it is important cams are ready by time falcons come back.
discouraged is just one word that comes mind.

been busy with other nests and this one , touch wood , is doing fine. Peter and I will try and get down there this weekend just to see if we can find perches. it is a jungle out there . so much glass windows and construction. Would it not be nice if the developers here were as environmentally conscious as the university of BC. they put decals on all their windows of a glass building, to try and cut down on bird hits. I could go on and on, but I am just one person among a sea of" it is not of interest to me " city of Toronto is making it mandatory fo r developers to do things with their glass also.

anyhow, back to the birds.

we do believe we have the same pair. we try and look at features and characteristics. even their call is different .If you watch enough , you will realize every falcon is different and so whenever there is a change over, a few of us, watch carefully for long hours to establish this. It would be nice if this cam would zoom in on bands etc, as we cannot scope from the ground. years back they used to do this for us. I would email or text when bird was there and they would zoom in.

except for a few things that are sometimes out of the ordinary, so far so good. You always know when something is amiss. right now it is important to make sure eggs are incubated continuously and that we have both falcons. and of course we hope that there is no human interference , such as window washers etc.

here are a few photos. will get more as days go on

isn't she stunning
