From the Savannah GHO nest -chat roll-

>from John Blakeman

My best wishes to all who viewed and posted on this site.

We all got to watch so intimately the raising of a new generation of Great Horned Owls. As a raptor biologist who has studied wild hawks and owls since the late 1960s, I’ve learned a great deal from nest cams such as this. Before nest cams were available, the activities of hawks and owls on their nests was difficult to watch. With spotting scopes and binoculars, from some distance away, we could determine only the generalized behaviors of the birds. But newly-hatched raptors could not be seen, only the feeding behaviors of the haggards (adults).

Now, we get to see things on the nest as never before. I hope this pair is able to return to this nest next year and replicate its successes.

In the meantime, I would encourage viewers to observe the wild birds in your areas, not just hawks and owls, but all birds. Equally important are the habitats these birds use and require to exist in. Do your part to support local park districts and wild areas. Learn the names of common local birds. Take delight in bird watching, whether at a feeder or nest box you might provide, or in wild areas in your neighborhood.

It’s been a delight to tell some of the biology of Bubo virginianus, the Great Horned Owl. Hope we can have more of this next year here.

Godspeed, fledged owls!

Look who is on the nest this am :))

I understand that ospreys moved into the nest last year after the owls departed. It looks like they are doing the same thing this year. Posts on the cam site indicate the ospreys have been visiting the nest all week. The cam is still up. Maybe we will have baby ospreys? We will have to move this continuing saga to the osprey section. :egg8:

OMG is right! Thanks Loza. What a mess. The Landings Facebook page indicates that they lost the perch branch in the hurricane. The tree trunk itself is sound, the nest is OK, and the structure they built onto the tree with the cams survived. That structure is supposed to also act as a buttress for the tree. However, there is no leaf cover or canopy over the nest. An owl did visit the nest before the storm. Wonder if they would nest there with no leaf cover. Here's some pics from the Landings Cam Facebook page after the storm.

Oklahoma celebrity owl found shot to death, game wardens investigating

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma game wardens are investigating the death of a local celebrity owl.

Over the past six years, seven million viewers logged on to watch the Click family's live camera feed.

Young Alessondra Click named the pair of great horned owls "Mr. and Mrs Tiger" because of their markings.

The Tigers decided to nest in the window box of her Rose Creek home.

"I set up a camera that enabled her to watch it in another area of the house. The streaming service we used had to be open to the public. That's really where it all began," said Alessondra's father, Jeff Click.

That was the beginning of a story that would touch people the world over.

"A woman emailed a few years ago that her mother had terminal cancer and spent her last days watching this feed all day," Click remembers.

There were six seasons of courting and laying and nesting and fledging.

Ten owlets hatched in their window box.

Alessondra was looking forward to next year's hatching. She'd already started hearing Mrs. Tiger hoot in the night.

Their story has enchanted people around the world.

Until October 4th, when a pellet gun, fired by a careless shooter brought all of that to a screeching halt.

A neighbor's surveillance video captured Mrs. Tiger crash landing into a home nearby and falling to her death.

"I just loved them so much," Alessondra said. "They were like a part of our family and when my parents told me it was like a pet dying. It made me really sad and kind of mad."

Alessondra's mom, Deziray Click commissioned a necropsy at OSU, confirming a cause of death.

"Definitely by measurements. The vet was 100% certain (Mrs. Tiger) was shot," said Deziray Click.
"When we finally got the results back we were shocked," said Jeff.

State game wardens are investigating the death of Mrs. Tiger.

It is a misdemeanor to kill a great horned owl. They are a federally protected species.

"This was a celebrity bird," said game warden Wade Farrar. "We treat it a little more special than if it was out in the woods and no one cared about that bird. This one had millions of followers all across the world."

It was a lifelong dream of Alessondra's to hold the owl she'd grown to admire and love.

Unfortunately, her chance came after Mrs. Tiger's death, a moment to say goodbye to the lifeless bird that brought life to so many.

"We believe Alessondra and these owls and those who have followed for years deserve some answers," said Jeff.

The game warden investigation is underway right now. They will be knocking on doors next week to get to the bottom of who shot the owl.

In the meantime, Mr. Tiger continues to hoot for his missing mate.

Researchers say there is a chance he will choose another mate, now that Mrs. Tiger is gone.

Video here: I didn't watch it, they said on FB may be graphic.

Such sad news. I feel so bad for Alessondra. :sorrow:

If a neighbor saw her fall, I wonder if they will be able to identify the shooter...

accidental my eye. that is a premeditated shot.

that I why I worry so much that we advertise where our birds are. Some do not disclose sites. they just put up cam. I am afraid I have little trust in humans , as far as nature goes

I wonder if a new female will come ???

Such a horrific and disgusting act...

I did watch the video...it was well done, with a touching interview with Allessondra. The final moments of Mrs. Tiger's life are from a security cam, which isn't very clear. Too bad that footage didn't show the shooter.

Bev., I agree with you..It always makes me nervous when a cam owner shares the location of a particular nest. While the majority of people out there wouldn't hurt a flea, there are always a few who get their jollies from killing!!
