That's interesting SGB. That branch is one of the Red-tailed hawk's favorite sitting spots.
Here's a pic I have of it's tail. Doesn't quite seem the same.

SGB I think your hawk was a Red Shouldered Hawk.

The male Acorn Woodpecker and his cache.

At 7:30pm PST the nest was blown from the tree in a strong windstorm. I'm not so sure the tree didn't fall over but we'll know in the morning.

Thank you skygirlblue. It was just confirmed that the tree is gone. 3 out of 4 cams were destroyed.

I am so glad this did not happen during nesting season. If ht ere are other trees around the hawks will rebuild. too bad about the cams . Maybe they can be fixed and they can watch and see where the hawks go to.

We have had terrible windstorms around h here lately also. Windows blown out in high rises, trees blown over. Roof torn off,

good catch MIck  even if a bit tragic.

Mick, your videos of this nest are just amazing. I just read on the RR forum that winds are expected to continue through Saturday, with gusts of 150 mph. That is worse than any hurricane! Wow!!!!
Hopefully this pair will find another tree on the property. Since the owner is a former CEO of a security cam company, replacing the cams shouldn't be a problem.

I received this e-mail today.

EagleCrest Update
Trees at EagleCrest and in the surrounding area took a great deal of damage from the wind last night. RamblinRaptor told me he had never seen anything like it in the time he's lived in the area. Over half of the tree the Red-tailed hawks nested in is gone. David McDonald, EagleCrest's owner, intends to restore the nest. We don't know exactly what that will look like yet, but will keep everyone posted. So far, there has been discussion of either rebuilding a stick nest or putting up a nest tray. Either way, the hawks still have time to nest this year.

Amy Ries

this is great news

Two before and after images.

Good news. The trunk and remaining limb are sound. David McDonald the owner of Eaglecrest will restore the nest site. First option (to be tried immediately) is to build and secure a nesting platform to the limb of the tree. The nest is amazingly intact. Included in the short video are 5 images taken onsite.

The nest. Photographs by RamblinRaptor and used with permission. Thank you RR!

Great coverage, Mick!!! And thanks...

Just amazing that they feel the tree is sound...After watching the national news, looks like there was quite a bit of destruction in CA and the midwest...one place recorded gusts up to 150 mph...and it could have been more..the gauge only went to 150....SCAREY STUFF!!!!

Wow Mick, wonderful!
Thank you for posting :)

It is so nice that the cam-owner has the resources to take care
of the rebuild nest and new cameras. Hope the hawks decide to take
advantage of the nestbox. :snowflake2:
