On the nest now, one very sleepy chick... so beautiful :)

One thing I do hope that will also come out of the Koo situation.....

That maybe it is time to look at the rules and regulations on wildbirds again, we are now moving on and have to take responsibilty for our actions.
Maybe there has to be stricter guidelines put in place for the banding and tagging of any wildbird.
I know accidents can happen... so maybe there needs to be DEFINATE rules as to when birds are found to have an injury, or if an injury is caused due to human intervention.

I am not in anyway blaming anybody for what is happening with Koo.... I just think if the rules were clearly set out, then there would be no delaying descisions.

If we choose to interfere with nature then we must take responsibilty!!!

NatureNut, thanks for the wonderful info that Koo is alive & eating! I was kinda dreading reading more news after continuing to hear that osprey don't do well in captivity & that Koo had a long bus ride to even get to the park where he/she could get help. It is also encouraging to hear that this park has been successful at rehabbing another osprey. Good start to my day!

Jo UK just reported this at Looduskalendar.

E-mail from Mari Heikkilla at Ranua Zoo.

Dear Jo,

thank you for your e-mail. As you can guess, lots of people has been contacting me today! I can not answer them all, but if You could be so kind and inform Looduskalender for my behalf.

So at this point the situation is like, that the bird arrived last night to our Wildlife Park. I give some fish and nutrientliqued to it (I needed to force him/her to eat.) This morning Koo was a bit more "fresh" and ate (swallowed freewillingly) the fish when I put it to its beak.

Now we are waiting for veterinarian to look at the bird. And just hope it will start to eat by him/herself and get stronger.

If it's OK with you, I could inform you about Koo's situation as soon as we know? And you could inform members of looduskalender.

Kind regards,

Mari Heikkilä
intendant
Ranua Wildlife Park

I have had the feeling all along that the poor handling of the chicks when they were taken out of the nest for banding at least may have made matters worse for Koo, if not the cause of the injury.
I thought it was unprofessional and disrespectful.
I agree; let's hope lessons are learned by those responsible in Finland.

I had great fun trying to translate some more news about Koo. There was one word that Google didn't translate: "rengastustapahtumassa"
I cut it up in smaller words and this was the result:
  • rengas=ring
  • tusta=tion
  • pahtumassa=intercultural dialogue
  • tumassa=nucleus
I think it's about the interaction between different species, in this case the one between the bird (Koo) and the human(s) that is/are now taking care of her/him.

RENGASTUSTAPAHTUMASSA means during the banding action, in the banding event... By the way, Koo was found 2 km away from the nest, which you can read in the nest news. So she was already making longer flights away from home. She was just propably too weak, based on her leg injury, and had not been able to have enough food, already when she was eating at the nest, like the intendent from Ranua says. We all saw her eating habits were not very economical, she had to use her wings in order to get something out of a fish.

By the way, the Finnish language is a tough bird for, like Koo :D , for automatic translation. We use a lot of compunds and hardly any prepositions or pospositions, they are connected to the word itself. And the body of the word may change a lot in many cases when the words are conjugated.

Many thanks to Kim in Italy and NatureNut for alerting us to the news of Koo. It will be wonderful for Kim to pass on any news she hears directly from the wildlife center, too.

Thanks also to newandworried for your continued assistance with translations of the Finnish language. DEF, I also appreciate your Google translations.

AH! Thank you very much for clearing that up "newandworried" . So I had it all wrong, not surprising when you think of it. It truly is a difficult language, even more so than Dutch.
Our language has similarities to English, German and French, but Finnish has a completely different history and roots. It's related to Hungarian and the Basque language I believe.
But I like to try and figure out what it says, even though Google or other translator engines don't pick up the finer details.
"Koo oli löydetty illalla eikä sitä olosuhteiden pakosta silloin siirretty minnekään, vaan se oli yön luonnossa. Oja, josta se löydettiin, oli kuiva."
Am I right in thinking that this sentence says that Koo stayed in the dry ditch overnight because there was no place to shelter her/him. And that the next morning they came back to pick her up and put her in a cardboard box to be transferred to Ranua Zoo. After the police had gotten in contact with them?

I hope JO UK from the Loodus forum will post an (email) address of both the police and the hunters association, so we all can thank them for rescuing "our" celebrity Osprey.

Your translation was correct, even though I doubt Koo stayed in the ditch overnight, "luonnossa" means in nature, might have been any safe place. It was said that she was so week, that "when taken out of the ditch, it couldn´t fly, even if tried to do so". Hope they found some other place for her than back to the ditch. Anyway, she´s safe now.

I'm on a quick break from work and don't have time to do links now, but Jo has posted some email addresses on the LK forum, I think including the hunting association.

And thanks for the translations and explanations, newandworried and DEF - I think it's amazing and wonderful how well we can communicate on the forums, considering the number of people from various countries who are part of the conversation! :D

Might I suggest to adjust the email addresses? This to prevent the mailboxes getting flooded with unwanted spam mails.

mari.heikkilaatranua.fi

postmasterathailuodonmetsastysseura.fi

Replace "at" with @
