I believe we would all have preferred a happier ending of this story, but I’m certain the veterinarian made the decision according to what is best for Koo rather than what is nicest for us people. The vet tells in the interview, that Koo´s both legs were very brittle, not only the deformed one. This brittle bones condition might be a birth defect or due to little exercise or both. We will probably never know exactly the reason to Koo´s leg deformity. However, we people got a lot to think about thanks to Koo, not bad for an osprey youngster.

Very good to know that both legs were found to be brittle - thank you for advising us of that ShShen - I suppose the very best thing that could come out of this would be that the volunteer ringers will in future be trained to "save for treatment" any seriously sick or injured Osprey - and thank you for your very true words of Koo's wonderful example to so many "viewers" of his indomitable spirit Image

I posted this on the old forum while this one was under attack
==============================================

Forever flying on your beautiful, mighty wings
Forever in the hearts of those who watched you grow up and fly free
Forever KOO

On the LKforum Ploughboy posted a poem:
Ploughboy wrote:
Bye bye KOO...

Death of the Bird by Alec Derwent Hope

For every bird there is this last migration;
Once more the cooling year kindles her heart;
With a warm passage to the summer station
Love pricks the course in lights across the chart.

Year after year a speck on the map, divided
By a whole hemisphere, summons her to come;
Season after season, sure and safely guided,
Going away she is also coming home.

And being home, memory becomes a passion
With which she feeds her brood and straws her nest,
Aware of ghosts that haunt the heart's possession
And exiled love mourning within the breast.

The sands are green with a mirage of valleys;
The palm tree casts a shadow not its own;
Down the long architrave of temple or palace
Blows a cool air from moorland scarps of stone.

And day by day the whisper of love grows stronger;
That delicate voice, more urgent with despair,
Custom and fear constraining her no longer,
Drives her at last on the waste leagues of air.

A vanishing speck in those inane dominions,
Single and frail, uncertain of her place,
Alone in the bright host of her companions,
Lost in the blue unfriendliness of space.

She feels it close now, the appointed season;
The invisible thread is broken as she flies;
Suddenly, without warning, without reason,
The guiding spark of instinct winks and dies.

Try as she will, the trackless world delivers
No way, the wilderness of light no sign;
Immense,complex contours of hills and rivers
Mock her small wisdom with their vast design.

The darkness rises from the eastern valleys,
And the winds buffet her with their hungry breath,
And the great earth, with neither grief nor malice,
Receives the tiny burden of her death.

Thanks so much, DEF, for posting your wonderful tribute and the beautiful poem that Ploughboy posted on the other forum.

I'm filled with sadness when I think of what might have been if only the circumstances and actions had been different regarding Koo. But at the same time, I remember the happiness I experienced when Koo was finally able to fly free.

Koo touched many of us in the short time she was here, and I'm sure her indomitable spirit will live on in our memories.
:loveheart2:

:thankyou Dutch Eagle Fan for posting the beautiful photo showing Koo with her wings outstretched. She was a beautiful osprey with such great spirit. And thank you for including the poem posted by Ploughboy

When the ringer noticed Koo's condition, he should not have ringed Koo. That was upsetting. Deep in my heart, I truly believe the outcome would have been different if Koo was taken from the nest at that time. But that didn't happen :( I tried my best to contact different people/agencies in Finland with the hope that Koo could be rescued, but the responses were not favorable. Very frustrating.

On a brighter note, I would like to share this with you:
In 2006 at the Dennis Puleston website, there was a different kind of drama that had a good ending. The youngest (and smallest) named Flag kept everyone on their toes. There were times we didn't think this chick would have fledged, but he/she did. Watch the clip "Hey, it's my turn"
http://puleston.osprey.bnl.org/OspreyFu ... rchive.php
We all cheered! During feeding times, Flag would often use mom as a wedge to keep Stripe (the eldest) away. What a smart bird!

I hope this will bring a smile to everyone--for a little while, at least.

Thanks to all of you for the wonderful and beautiful tributes to Koo...from the beautiful pictures and touching poem to the comforting words we have all had for each other. Its so amazing how this one little bird touched all of our hearts...for me, Koo just represented all the courage and heart of every creature as each struggles to survive and thrive in their world. From the hatchlings who make it to fledge, to the fledglings who triumph over migration, and to the adults who overcome all the world's obstacles to find their life's partner and start the process all over again with their own offspring...and to those that don't make it...its not that they didn't try...I think of them...from Kaver and white boy and apollo and lunge and others....and of course our sweet Orville...

...but then we were witness to the miracles as well...mariah's recovery, quick action with the Great River kids, Richmond's return to the ledge, a fledge watch in Edmonton, success at Manitoba, a forum member fledge watch at Harrisburg AND columbus, an osprey chick at Blackwater..the list goes on and on...

Its been great sharing all of this with everyone...and shshen...that video....that's why we watch cams!!!

SGB, what a beautiful summary of this wonderful, stressful, successful, and heartbreaking season. You have me crying again, but tears of joy because this forum is filled with such loving and supportive people . . . well it just makes me proud to be a part of it all.

Thanks to shshen for posting the link to Flag's feisty survival techniques. The other videos on the Puleston website are gifts, also. Reminders that nature can be both awesome in its beauty as well as fickle.

KOO is forever embedded in our hearts and souls, but I am certain she would want us to carry on, in her memory, and in the same manner that she persevered throughout her short, but very full life.

That's odd :shock: Why would they use a pic of a White-tailed Sea Eagle on an Osprey cam? Well I guess it's not that surprising considering who's in charge of the cam :roll:

Beth, thanks for catching that!

SHSHEN - LOVE the video of Flag, the artful dodger, who is smart as a whip! Have watched it several times and have sent it all over the world...literally. A whisper of joy to bring us happiness in the year of KOO.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING! :thankyou The video has helped many, including me (!), remember that nature can be both kind and unkind.:mmd:

Hi MaryG
Glad the video brought a bit of sunshine to your day. I remember Flag had a difficult time with Stripe who was oldest and (of course) the nest "bully". Every time Flag outsmarted Stripe, we cheered him on.
There were times, the drama was too much to bear but in the end, Flag survived and fledged. He was quite a "yakker"--always cheeping away(I almost nicknamed him motor mouth), especially when Flag spotted fish being delivered. What a racket, even when he was eating.
Three years has passed and I often wonder what happened to Flag. I can only imagine that he is fine and returned to a nest nearby (or built his own) and raised a family.

Such a memorable osprey...just like Koo. I agree, nature can be both kind or unkind...

Hello Everyone..
I am passing on this beautiful story which stirred up memories of Koo. "If only"--I thought...
Enjoy the photos, but they can't be used without permission from the Center.
