Just tuning in - have been away.

Sadness prevails...but happiness for Koo to be free at last. Her determination and indomitable spirit will live on in all of us. Peace be with you, dear Koo, on your spiritual journey and know that your friends are with you - always.

NatureNut - KOO's halo is beautiful - captures her essence. Thank you.

And, grateful to CAL04 at Hancock for posting the learning to fly KOO. It, also, captures KOO's spirit and determination, which we will never forget.

I agree. I really can't improve on what you said, MaryG. And I too think NatureNut's picture of Koo's halo is beautifully symbolic. Thanks.

I am sorry to be enquiring about this so late in Koo's story - but did they work out whether it was a "birth defect" or occurred thru damage after hatching?

This may help to answer your question, not the first time this pic has been posted on the internet...but Calo4 just reposted it on Hancock. Of course we don't know if Koo is being gently taken out of the nest, or being gently put back in the nest.

Here is some information posted by Olga on LK Forum~~~~
"There was a news from YLE (Finnish radio) from 17:59. Description of the condition and situation of Koo, soemthing about the results seen from x-ray of Koo's legs. I hope someone who can better English than me could translate the news. Anyways it is told that the knee, or leg of Koo had been broken sometime before time (?), "the doctor said that bones had ossified in the wrong position. The bones were so fragile be cause of lack of calcium (?), so it was impossible to make surgery operation"..

So was not a birth defect and you can see in Ringer picture that foot/leg was already crooked then.

Mmmm ... I have just been going back thru the pics on old BCAW &, like KF said straight after the banding & discovery of the broken leg, you never see all three chicks standing prior to banding - so maybe Koo was nursing the broken leg for quite awhile - maybe he even suffered from some condition that caused "brittle bones" - I know it does look horrible that pic of the ringer putting him back but perhaps that was the only way he could hold his legs (I think handlers always hold big raptors legs). Sort of "thinking out loud" I know, but it helps to try & reconcile the "why" of Koos life & death.

I am wondering if a high accumulation of lead in the egg could have caused damage to this chick esp. with regard to Calcium (as per the veterinarian's reason for not operating). Here is something I found along this line of thinking:

Most lead ends up in the bone, where it causes even more problems. Lead can interfere with the production of blood cells and the absorption of calcium that bones need to grow healthy and strong. Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth, muscle contraction, and nerve and blood vessel function.

I've been thinking about the ringing of Koo. IF the ringer saw the injured leg, that person should NOT have ringed Koo and let "nature take its course" according to the words of the NOREC and Pulkkinen.
Bad choice on the part of the ringer!!!

Hi Everybody,

I just posted this info on the Looduskalender forum.
I visited Pulkkinen's website http://kotinetti.suomi.net/saaksi/index.php
and saw a link to Ranua at the lower left hand corner. There were pictures of Koo :thud

I am certain the staff at Ranua did the very best they could in caring for Koo and were probably upset themselves at the veterinarian's decision.

To be blunt, Koo's physical condition probably had been deteriorating for some time, or else she would have been able to return to the nest instead of becoming trapped in a ditch, unable to get out on her own. I am grateful Koo had a painless passing - rather then a slow, painful passing in a ditch or worse, object of a predator.

We all loved Koo and her indomitable spirit. We'll probably never know how or why her leg was not normal. What we do know is that the world will remember her determination and brave heart.

Thank you all.
For every nice, sweet thought about Koo and for spending together these latest sad days.
I agree with shshen:
"I've been thinking about the ringing of Koo. IF the ringer saw the injured leg, that person should NOT have ringed Koo and let "nature take its course" according to the words of the NOREC and Pulkkinen.

And, yes, Mary G, " We'll probably never know how or why her leg was not normal."
Her determination and brave heart was in her nature.
We all will never forget this little great creature.
Good night sweet bird..

I believe we would all have preferred a happier ending of this story, but I’m certain the veterinarian made the decision according to what is best for Koo rather than what is nicest for us people. The vet tells in the interview, that Koo´s both legs were very brittle, not only the deformed one. This brittle bones condition might be a birth defect or due to little exercise or both. We will probably never know exactly the reason to Koo´s leg deformity. However, we people got a lot to think about thanks to Koo, not bad for an osprey youngster.

Hi MaryG
Thanks for you post.

That was a great capture, PruJoy! Thank you.

She passed in the company of caring people and not alone in the ditch where the hunter found her. Koo is now free to fly the heavens with other ospreys that have passed away...no pain, no deformed leg anymore...just happy to soar the skies.

I'll always remember this beautiful osprey.

I hope we can do something like set up a fund at Ranua or send money to support the Heinolan Bird Sanctuary in memory of Koo?? I only mentioned the Heinolan Sanctuary because at the present time, it may be shut down due to $$ issues...
