Kitten, Thanks, they usually don't turn the cam on until around 4/1, the male usually returns around the end of the first week in April. I hope they take this extra time to get the cam view right....most of the time last season it was to far away, or to close up....you know far away for eggs and chicks, then close up for fledging

On the Hancock Forum, Gerard posted one of the chicks died….then Junglejude posted a link to a video he made. It shows the female apparently, not only eating the dead chick, but also feeding it to the remaining chick. The female is clearly distressed and calling. As far as I can tell from the earlier posts, the male has not been on the nest since early morning today.

Hi Jazzel
I just read your post and am viewing the nest. There is a lone adult osprey present but no sight of a chick. Did it fledge?
The adult looks like it is on the alert for a possible intruder...looks very tense and on high alert.

Sad to hear about the death of one of the two chicks :-(

Shshen, the nestling is doing very well, just 40 days old. All the north east states have been in a very bad heat wave, the females are shading :girlwithfan:

Looks like an empty nest this morning, unless it's hiding in the corner :smilesun: They were all there yesterday afternoon.

I found this very interesting post on the PSNH cam site :think

Osprey Online
PSNH Osprey Project: A Natural Partnership
Challenging Year for the Osprey

It's been a challenging year for the Ayers Island osprey. After returning to the nest and successfully producing at least two eggs the adult male disappeared, presumable meeting an ill-fated end and leaving the female alone to tend to the nest and the eggs, and to hunt for food.
Fortunately, soon after losing her mate an available male in the area showed up on the scene and has been with her since. However, during this difficult period one of the two chicks died. But the good news is the nest produced one healthy chick and we have a pair of adults ready to pick it up again next year.
Note: The Osprey Cam is down for the season. Please check back again in the Spring of 2011 for its return!
