Looks like only one chick is being fed while the other is taking a break.
The other chick just got up and the first one being fed is balled up. I am assuming the assaults have started between the chicks.

Two chicks being fed. Did something happen to the third chick or is it just hidden from view?

Catbird, the third chick has not been seen since 5/14. Sorry for the late reply, internet problems :comp I was hoping to see the chick now, but after all this time, I'm sure it didn't survive

7:49 pm EEST (12:49 pm EDT, 9:49 PDT)

Mom left a few minutes ago, the chicks are flatlets, and I think I'm hearing voices - perhaps the crew has arrived to ring the chicks.

Nest is shaking back and forth - ladder against the side?

7:55 pm EEST
Just saw the top of a ladder momentarily.
Someone is there.
First eaglet bagged - did hold it by its legs, but didn't look to me as if the position should cause damage to a chick with healthy bones.
Person went down ladder with chick in bag.
(I have pics - but may not get them up for a day or two.)

8:00 pm EEST
Hasn't returned - perhaps they band, measure, etc first chick, then return it and do the second.

8:02 pm EEST
Am seeing the top of a different person's head. Person 2 is cleaning the cam and possibly adjusting it a bit.
Better view for watching flight, but setting sun currently makes the nestbowl dark - hard to see remaining chick.

8:08 pm
Live cam is starting to buffer - I'm opening the refresh cam in another window in case I lose the live cam. Still no sign of first chick.

It's now 8:24 pm and they are packing up - action was non-stop

Person 1 brought the first chick back, carrying it in his hands, rather than in a bag, and returned it to the nest. He then grabbed the second chick, and worked on it while on the ladder. His body blocked some of what was going on, but he put on a band/ring, appeared to be measuring some part of the wing, and I think was measuring some part of the foot. Possibly other things as well. I didn't see them taking a blood sample.

The first chick had been standing frozen when first returned to the nest; somewhere during the grabbing of the second chick, the first went back to being a flatlet and stayed near motionless while they worked on the second.

Once they had finished with the second, s/he stood defiantly in the nest, occasionally extending his/her wings. Person 1 went down the ladder and came back with a camera and took a number of pictures. Then person 2 came up and took a number of pictures. The first chick stayed motionless through all of this and they didn't try to take his/her photo - perhaps they did that while they had the chick out of the nest.

Eventually they departed. It's now 8:31 pm EEST and both chicks are lying in the nest. I need to go out for a while so may not be able to report on the return of the adults - will check when I get back.

Added - Adult back - 8:34 pm EEST

Wow! The chicks look so grown up...it looks like they could fledge at any time now.

CATBIRD, beautiful pic!!

And you are correct they could fledge any time now. In fact one could fledge today, the first fledged last season on 7/28 at 49 days old, they have the exact hatch dates as last season. Finland nests, like the UK nests fledge at an earlier age than the US nests.

Thanks for the info Jazzel. It does look as though at least one of the chicks might fledge today. He/she was doing a whole lot of flapping just now...even lifted up off the nest (with proud parent looking on) before coming back down for a nice landing.

Hi Conny! Thanks so much for the lovely slide show...I suspect we won't be seeing these beautiful chicks for much longer as they are so close to fledging. I just checked in on them, and both are sleeping in the semi-darkness. I think they are resting up for more flight practice when the sun rises.

Every once in a while one of the chicks it out of sight. I think it is standing all the way to the left, on the edge of the nest that we can't see.
It is time for some zoom-out! Is there somebody that can contact Voitto Pulkkinen or maybe Ploughboy can ? Please :rolleyessun: :smilesun:
