I went to the WHOI nest yesterday...nest check. The nest platform has been rebuilt, added a perch, and nesting material cleaned up and put back in place. Jeff said I wouldn't believe the things they found in the nest (OH YES I DO), his best find was a camera  As you will see from my photo, the cam is gone....to quote Jeff "the schmutz on the cam was on the inside of the housing". The cam will be clear, and up before the start of the nesting season.

WHOI has a new cam, they put it up yesterday. I went down to watch, but of course I didn't have my camera with me to get pictures of the installation, DUH! I went back today to get a few site pics of the cam.

The cam is in place, and focused, they just need a couple of days to get the new server stuff tweaked. I got to see the cam view on their computer, it's going to be great. Also with the new server the cam won't go down like it used to, Jeff is very happy about that!!! The link to the cam will remain the same.

The cam has zoom. Also, sound, which they decided at this point not to use, because of wind interference. They couldn't get the new perch in the cam view because they're using the same mounting pole from last year and it's to late to change it now, but they will put a new mount up next year. The cam even has a windshield wiper! And, they put in a little gravel road to access the nest.

Jeff did a great job getting the funding and everything in place for the NEW WHOI CAM PROJECT....THANK YOU JEFF!!!

The WHOI nest has had an immature RTH for the past three years, never a problem. Now she has a couple of males courting her and they are being somewhat pests, he spent most of his time yesterday giving them the BOOT.

When I went back yesterday afternoon all he did was chase them around, so I never did get him back on the nest for good photos, I'll try again this afternoon.

The two photos I got in the morning are as bad as I knew they would be, but I'll post them anyway. I'm also posting a photo of the RTHs I got when I went back in the afternoon, and a photo of a small herd of deer on the hill next to the nest (there were 5, I could only get four in the photo). Woods Hole is a very strange place to see a deer, never mind 5

If anyone sees a osprey on the nest please get a pic and time. There has been no osprey on the nest or anywhere at the site since 11:00 am Sunday, and not even a stick added to the nest. Very unusual, not good. I'm going down there now to have a look around. This is the nest now, so if there's a change we can tell. Thanks.

Beth, thanks for keeping the cam up :loveheart2:

I spent the morning at the nest, no sign of the ospreys, I checked all their usual places, then just watched and waited. The weather is bad, but other nests I watch had ospreys on the nest, or in trees close by. This is not looking good, but if it wasn't the female returning Sunday (as Pam posted on DPOF ) she may be back today or very soon. She returned last season 3/30, four days after the male.

I'll be going back to the nest around 3:00 this afternoon.

Thanks to every one watching!!!

Beth, thanks :openrose:

I went back this afternoon, until about 5:00 when the fog started rolling in and I couldn't see 100' in front of me. On my way back I checked the other osprey nests in the area, all were normal with one or both ospreys. I just hope there's not injured ospreys out there. I have no clue why at least one of the ospreys from Sunday morning didn't come back to the nest.

I'm hoping if the second osprey on Sunday wasn't the female (and I don't believe it was) she'll return in the next couple of days and attract a new male.

I'll be back at it tomorrow, hope with better news.

I'm at the nest and there's an osprey circling around, if it lands on the nest I won't be able to tell if it's the female or not. So if anyone can watch the cam for an hour, in case it lands, to get a pic that would be great.

Kitten, I was there yesterday all afternoon...there are two ospreys fighting with three RTHs. Very, very, very strange for the ospreys to defend their nest territory, but not get on the nest, or any of their usual perches. They attack, then fly off out of sight... I have no idea where they go...but I'm trying to figure this one out.

It's also unusual for RTHs to be a problem for ospreys.

One answer may be that one of the osprey pair is new, not the same one from last year, and they may not have really bonded yet????
