If you mean what fish - don't know - but with fish yes.
She seems to come to the nest in the evenings with a partly eaten fish. She don't
finish the fish there - she only checks if there would be Odin (?) coming. This takes
only two minutes and she is off.

About an hour later she comes back to check the situation again - without the fish.

These pics are from today of that second evening checking visit to the nest.

Annie, I wouldn't eat my fish on a snow covered nest. I'm sure she's smart enough to take her food to a nice tree, and she would never leave a fish on the nest...attracts predators.

The UK ospreys, but not all, seem to have a reverse system from the North American ospreys, females returning first, so interesting. Don't you just love it? I do :cloudnine:

No doubt! She has been mostly eating her fish in a tree even when there was snow at all. I didn't know excatly what you were asking for, so I simply told what happened during those pics at the nest. - Sorry my english isn't that good. But hey, what was it you were asking me to tell??

That is interesting - It has been so nice to look EJ also this morning (local time) when she has been at the nest several times, so activ and conscious. I think she maybe is quite an exceptional bird. Last summer she leaved the nest (and the chicks) couple of times for fishing even there was no need for that. Odin brought much of fishes to the nest. However I'm sure about she had been assesing the situation would bear it.

Site manager Richard Thaxton says: It has to be Odin surely!

Annie, thanks for the great news, and very nice slideshow. I still have a hard time believing all that snow, but it does make a nice background for the nest :rainbow

:spingirl: Odin the Mega-dude

He's back to his best!

Yup the Odin from last year seems to have returned. Three fish today,
all of which he has shared with EJ, and ten lovely big sticks for the nest, what a guy.
At the time of writing both birds have left the nest, perhaps away fishing or
just out enjoying the sunshine!....... hold the press, Odin just brought
back another fish, there is no stopping him at the moment! So all looks well on the nest,
no dramas as yet. Opsreys will usually mate for roughly two weeks before the first
egg is laid so lets keep our fingers crossed for some eggs later on this week.
Oh and another point of interest for you, EJ and Odin have mated 63 times so far, 63!!! :smilegirl:
He's only been back a week!

So all is good on the osprey nest and there are even some signs of spring in the air.
We've seen our first swallow of the season and there is this weird big yellow
thing in the sky!!! Its enough to put a big cheesy grin on your face.

Thats really all there is to say at the moment, all is quiet at the nest. I'm sure there
will be plenty of twists and turns to come during the season, but for the moment,
sit back, grab a cup of tea, and enjoy our beautiful ospreys.

David.

P.S. I've just been told that the big yellow thing in the sky is in fact the sun,
its been a while!

Hot temperatures, beautiful sunshine and an easy life….

…No I’m not talking about Loch Garten, instead I refer to the current lifestyle
being enjoyed by Rothes. After eventually sorting out all the ‘techie issues’,
I have managed to get the latest data from the satellite.
Our wayward youngster is still hanging out around Ilha de Unhocomozinho
(I dare you to try saying that fast!) off the coast of Guinea-Bissau (West Africa)
where she will currently be practicing her hunting skills and generally enjoying
the easy life (The data should be updated after 8pm tonight).
Meanwhile at Loch Garten life has settled into a fairly predictable pattern involving;
mating, nest materials, more mating, fish and….yes, you guessed it….more mating!
At the time of writing we have had approximately 85(ish) successful mating attempts,
which will continue until EJ has laid her first egg. (Hopefully by the end of the
week/start of next week)
There was some excitement late yesterday afternoon when a female intruder
landed on the camera tree and set EJ off alarm calling. After an aborted attempt
to land on the nest (EJ screaming at her all the time from the nest!) the intruder
vanished. EJ looking very pleased with herself then returned to sorting out the nest.
Aside from the osprey and several sighting of the sun (a rare thing indeed),
we have also had lots of common toads on the reserve and Izzy managed
to catch a common lizard to show to some of the children at the centre.
It seems that nature has decided that it is now truly spring
(fingers crossed it stays that way!!)
Paul (Osprey Information Assistant)
PS. Many thanks to OriginalGoldFinch for the chocolate cake. It was very
much appreciated by the staff at the centre.
