There is an update on LOL. (I followed the link in Jazzel's post.) They are reporting that she has fed herself & the chicks 4 times today, but they don't think she's 100%. I join the rest of you in hoping that she will pull through...

Saw the Lady's lift off - it was absolutely amazing! She stood on branch for a few minutes and then off she went. Her instinct obviously directed her to drink water before ingesting any food. High hopes - we'll have to see what happens in the next few days.

She did return because the reports on the LOL forum said she flew off to get a drink of water, seemed to have trouble finding her way back to her nest, & after that is when she ate & fed the chicks. I would think that being severely dehydrated would explain her disorientation, but I guess we'll see.

It's been an emotional day watching her. She is the most amazing bird!! A few of us on the Maine forum watched her most of the day. It's amazing how much she improved. After her return this afternoon the male brought in another fish. She charged him, took the fish, then seemed to try and hold it for the chicks to feed themselves. Later he came in with another fish - and they both started feeding the chicks, and she started eating!! That was the best thing in the world to see! She hadn't eaten all weekend!

If you want - you can look through all the posts at Maine, starting here ....
http://www.hostingphpbb.com/forum/viewt ... dbc#187879

Also, JudyB found a video of the interview Peter gave today at the Loch - with video of Lady.

We'll see what tomorrow brings!!

Thanks for the report and links, PattiO!

I checked in on the nest earlier this morning, and all was looking good!

Unbelievable how much better she looks today - lots of fish brought in - she ate, the chicks ate! Peter warns though that she's not out of the woods. She lost a lot of weight and he doesn't think her eyes look too good yet. This may well be the last season we see her.

Sleep-deprived here having been watching LOTL practically non-stop for the past few days...as have hundreds of people from all over the world. What an awesome coming together of folks in support of Lady and the Laird and family and, of course, the staff members Peter and Fiona.

Lady recently caught one of her talons in the nest, and in the process of freeing herself, pulled out the talon. Peter actually came across the talon when he was panning the cam in closeup view. We'll never know, but I'm wondering if perhaps the wound became infected. Just some thoughts...

The important piece is that the staff made the correct decision, I believe, and ruled out human intervention. Nature took its course, and in this case, it appears to have done well by this fine, 27 year old osprey.

One of Marcia's videos on the Maine forum shows the closeup of the talon and of the Lady's foot. PattiO posted a link to the thread a few posts back, and I'm afraid I'm on a quick break so don't have time to get a more direct link.

I think part of the reason that she may have had trouble finding the nest is that the membrane over her eyes was closed much of the weekend. I have wondered if going to the water was also to moisten that - though haven't looked through the blog posts to see if that was discussed. Maybe this weekend. :-)

Today's Morning Report from Peter...

24 June 2010
Morning all
It was great to come into another glorious morning and to see our girl feeding the chicks. She was also not happy at another osprey taking a look at the nest, she was shouting at it while continuing to feed the chicks so could not have posed a serious threat to her.

On the loch we have three bar-headed geese at the moment, probably escapees, it is a lovely change from the usual Canada geese we have here all year round.

Thanks for your posts during the night I do look forward to reading them in the morning. It is a shame we can't be here to moderate them. Peter

I caught a feed...I think this is mom, but I'm not sure...maybe someone can clarify...

Image

length: 4:00

Dad (or mom) comes at the end and takes the fish away...they had zoomed in, so all you see are feet...

Nest update from the LOL site

1 July 2010
What a delight it is to wake early this morning to gentle rain at last! The woods around Lowes are dripping musically and the loch surface is rippled by drops of much needed rain!

Our two young ospreys are snuggled in the nest using their newly acquired waterproof feathers to keep dry - their first real test so far! Mum no longer needs to be their umbrella, and instead is watching from her perch regally.

She now also feels confident enough in their ability to defend themselves, to leave the chicks for short periods - the longest yet was this morning for nearly an hour. She has even begun indulging in a little fishing herself, which is a fabulous sign of her regaining her strength.

It may be a little as ten days before the chicks first flight - we are entering the ‘thrills and spills’ time of year! Emma

The Lady of the Loch has begun her migration . . . Let's pray she has the strength to complete it one more time and return to her nest next spring.
