I made a cutout of one the shots and made it a litle lighter.

I too think this is a juvenile. One from the far North, a bit late with it's migration perhaps?

Beth, very nice pic. This shows the Red-tailed Hawk's distinctive white speckled V on the scapulars. Juveniles are very trusting (for lack of a better word), you can get very, very close to them. When they reach breeding age, typically 3 years, they fly off when approached.

It's very cold, maybe it's feet really are blue today  But at least it's staying out of trouble, unlike this one in Boston!!!

Update on the trapped hawk, it was captured yesterday afternoon. I can't believe they didn't place netting near the floor and over the exit to break any probable crash, they certainly had plenty of time!!! This is an immature Coopers Hawk, as someone in the story said, not a RTH. I was paying more attention to the report than the photo yesterday, but clearly the heavy streaking on the breast is an immature Coopers or Sharp-Shinned Hawk, immature RTH has a white breast and streaked belly. It makes more sense that a Coopers was in the subway...likely chasing pigeons.

Link to the report and video of this pathetic "rescue" . I hope this young bird survives!!!!
