Judy....as always :bow :bravo. Amazing how the two siblings were so defensive during the rescue, almost challenging the human 'intruder' ...then after the rescue the all three appeared to be very defensive. Adding this to my Osprey Facts File...getting very full this season... :thud

JudyB, shshen, and Jazzel - Thanks for the wonderful news - and nice slide show - about the second rescue to remove more fishing line caught around one of the chicks. (It's truly a shame that this gets left in the environment and then picked up by the ospreys while building their nests or bringing fish back to their nests.)

P.S. I used to watch this nest a lot last season, but haven't checked in much this season because the picture was always so blurry on the live cam. I'd totally forgotten that I could access clear still pictures until I read JudyB's note about switching to the still cam while documenting the rescue. :?

I must say I was amazed at Ed's calm demeanor as he was untangling the line from those very sharp talons, while being screamed at by two large (and mobile) chicks! I found it interesting that the youngest decided to switch from the "young chick - as long as I'm very flat, I'm invisible" mode to the "look as big as possible while defending the nest" mode - in part because Ed had to lay the entangled chick more or less where #3 had been hiding, but possibly taking a cue from the older chick's actions.

I'm not as organized as you, Jazzel, so I'll just stick this in the back corner of my brain, and spend hours looking for this if someone asks at what age chicks go from hiding to defending.

If I stick something in the back of my brain, it's LOST  That's the only reason I file things....I just need to find the file :?

Hi Beth

You are welcome. It is the watchful eyes of everyone that helps in the success of all osprey nests :thankyou

Again, thanks JudyB for your great pictures!

Checked in on the nest this morning (7am KY Time) It was fabulous to see a juvie taking the fish away from the adult and eating on its own. It didn't last long when another juvie took it away. Surprisingly there was no aggressive behavior or mantling. I guess they just had a meal because the third chick didn't move from the right side of the nest.

I just received a 'heads up' from Ed  George just posted this video of "flight training" on their site.

The oldest will be 55 days on 7/3...they're practicing :loveshow:

Great video of flight training. Love the "flapping" stage. And, was very pleased to see the little one join in the action toward the end. He (assumption) has managed to overcome tons of aggression from the older two chicks and to figure out devious ways to assure that he received his share of the grub!

KUDOS TO THE LITTLE ONE!

Nicely done, Kitten! Interesting - I feel very protective of the little one, also. He's definitely a survivor and has reached the point in growth where the sibling "bullies" feel secure enough to leave him alone!
