DGIF personnel and skilled volunteers will be stationed in the area surrounding the nest building. This will allow us to track the young birds’ first efforts and ensure that they are capable of sustained, controlled flight. This monitoring effort will continue until we are confident in the flight abilities of the fledglings. Should one of the fledglings encounter difficulty and end up on the ground, DGIF staff will recover the fledgling and either return it to the ledge or ensure prompt treatment and transportation to a licensed rehabilitation facility if necessary.

This is so great to hear that there will be a fledge watch!!!

I agree Denise. I thought that it might fall into my hands. I am very grateful that DGIF folks will be there and are organizing it. It usually seems to be the local audubon groups that do this, unless there is an established program. I should be there for most of it, and members of my rehab group are volunteering for shifts. As Libbie has said, fledge watching significantly improves survivability of falcons in the first few days of fledging. We want to make sure we can do that here.

It's great that you will not be at it alone Barb!! Improving the falcons survival in the first few days of fledging has definitely proven to be successful in Harrisburg. They do a wonderful job each year and have saved many downed falcons by being there. I hope this is the beginning of a yearly tradition here at Richmond. Yay!!

That is such good news about the Richmond falcon fledge watch! And it's great that you'll be there for some or most of it, obxbarb.

Just wondering how it works with this caged situation as I have heard many say that the parents withhold food to encourage the juvies to fly. The parents must know that it's time for them to fly. Will they continue to feed them regularly?

I'm just guessing, but based on what I've seen the last few days, they seem to be fed less frequently.

Here are a few shots from today:

I've seen them looking up alot today (all 3, so not one of them hanging from the cage). Just wondering if parents were doing flybys with prey like at other nests. My gosh, surely they realize the babies cannot get out of the cage. Less feedings means less water, but maybe they are getting something from rain. :?:

They are starting to look really trim. Let's just hope everyone knows what they are doing by waiting until next week. If one was in rehab, I guess the bird wouldn't be eating as much either. I don't mean to alarm anyone. I'm just thinking. Wait, didn't I post 'Later is better?'

I'm not ready to say so long to our beloved ones...

Last night I had DVD "Australia" and the tune of "Over the Rainbow" was played as part of the important schemes of things --- I just kept picturing our late Orville. :(
