Got a progress report today on 00/AE: she's eating well and overall doing good. She might be transferred to an outdoor cage in about 2 weeks (most likely to just get her used to being outdoors again). She still has a long recovery, but so far so good! :dancing3:

You're welcome, hopefully I'll have additional positive news in the weeks ahead :callonme:

In the meantime, some digging through Flickr on a fairly boring evening turned up these gems from another office worker at 101 Hudson from early 2008:

Mom enjoying a pigeon in early January 2008:

Dad likes pigeons too! Early and mid-March 2008:

Gosh, it seems like we should be able to see bands that close up on mom. So close, and yet so far! Very nice pics!

I got an update on our injured Jersey Girl, 00/AE, from a Raptor Trust volunteer. She is doing good! She's in a large outdoor flight cage, and has been taking good short flights back and forth. Once 3 Peregrines from Brooklyn are released, she will be moved into a circular flight cage, where they will be better able to judge her flight strength/stamina. All in all, she's doing good!! I'm hoping to go there this coming Sunday to visit her. :dancing3:

Somewhat off-topic, but I'm posting a link to the Meadowlands Blog. Quite a number of reports of Peregrines hunting the shorebirds at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst (not far south of Giants Stadium), and Kearny Marsh (just east of downtown Newark). The Kearny report mentioned "PeregrineS", which has piqued my interest. I've been wondering if our other 3 JC girls would spread into the Meadowlands (just a few miles Northwest of JC) by late summer. Adult Peregrines have been reported in downtown Newark in prior years (no known fledgings tho), so perhaps its them. But if there are juveniles hunting there, then perhaps its the JC gals?

A few posts down on the blog is a report I made from Saturday (8/21) of a juvie Peregrine attacking an American Avocet (I couldn't tell if the falcon was banded or not):

Thanks for the update, Mike! Glad to hear that your girl in rehab is doing well, & wouldn't it be something if the peregrines in the Meadowlands area are the others? :dancinggirls:

Thanks for the great update Mike! I'm sure the birders are not thrilled to see a falcon going after one of their rare birds :o We have a similar problem at Cobb, and nobody is very happy about it. Its great for us to see those juvies out on their own! Hopefully its one of yours. Glad to hear your girl is doing well too.

Went to Kearny Marsh yesterday and DeKorte today. Didn't see any Peregrines at Kearny, but did run into the birder that saw it/them last weekend. One caught a shorebird in a part of the marsh that's difficult to see (Kearny only has 1 trail covering the western part of the marsh; you need a kayak or canoe to check out the other areas). He had a kayak and was around the southeastern part of the marsh when it happened. I totally forgot to ask him if the falcon(s) was adult or juvenile (as well as how many he saw, doh!!). If it/they were adults, they're very likely from downtown Newark (just a few minutes' drive west). If they were juvies, that creates more questions, lol.

I saw a juvie Peregrine today at DeKorte farther north, and got a great look at its legs but alas, no bands! It hung out on one of those high-tension towers for about 10 minutes before flying east to hunt.

Hopefully I can run into that Kearny birder again, can't believe I forgot to ask him about adult vs. juvie lol

Thanks for the update Mike. Many falcon adults are returning home now that the kids are off exploring. Hopefully you will see yours as well.

Just came back from visiting 00/AE at the Raptor Trust. I stood just outside her large outdoor cage and got to see her take some flights (she even landed on a log on the sandy cage floor less then 10 feet away from me! I think it was her way of saying "Hi"). Almost impossible to get a pic tho; they have a mesh behind the chain-link portions of their cages, so neither the cage occupant nor anything on the outside can reach through.

They're not sure when she can be released yet. She's still waiting for an open spot in the circular flight cage, but for now she's building her strength flying back-and-forth in the rectangular cage she's in. She looked pretty good from what I saw, but could definately use some more time.

I also found out more about the fracture. X-rays showed the break was diagonal across the long part of the bone, not straight across the narrow part. This is very good, as it allows the 2 parts much more of a surface to fuse back together, rather then a narrow section.

So all in all, things are looking good for her! Once she gets into the larger cage and does more sustained flying, they'll have a better idea of when her release will be. :dancing3:

No problemo 8-) Quite a turnaround from last month when we weren't sure if she'd be releasable! She's a fighter!
