Red Girl is in the box now, wings to the side and beak open. It's too hot, although she doesn't really look stressed.

An hour ago she was perched on the box ledge, facing out, then made squeaky gate noises and jumped in the box as CJ flew up to perch two ledges to the right.

Mourning dove and robin yesterday. Black-billed cuckoo today.

I looked up the Yellow-billed Cuckoo on this site. Quite a large bird!
Hope it's a very common bird, otherwise it might become extinct with CJ favouring them . . .

It was indeed surprising how many cuckoos CJ's father Caesar and now CJ have been catching since 2003. There are more cuckoos around than we thought, although I usually hear them around my house in summer if I am outside long enough. Their numbers in the list of the falcons' prey seem to be holding up year to year.

Cuckoos are secretive, hiding in the leaves, and Accipiter hawks (Cooper's or sharp-shinned in the US, sparrow hawks in Europe) are more obvious threats to them than sky hunters like peregrines. The falcons must soar high, spot cuckoos on the canopy below and fly in low to take them by surprise.

Someone is there--I'm thinking Red, but I haven't seen a band so I'm not sure...

I think she's still there (unless Red Girl and CJ switched places).

Greg and DEF - Thanks for the info on Yellow-billed Cuckoos. I've never seen one, but it really looked beautiful in the picture when I clicked DEF's link. I'm sure I wouldn't like to see the head of one (let alone the head of any bird caught by CJ) lying on the sidewalk.

I agree, nice pictures everyone. I'm guessing Catwoman's and Catbird's are Red Girl, and Alison's are CJ -- he looks smaller than the other one in the same parts of the box.

CJ just made a quick stop to check out the scrapes in the nest box.

Greg at least those two are in great numbers for sure. We had a flock of doves at our feeders yesterday. Thought of our Falcon friends as I watched them. Thanks for the side walk report.
