After last year I thought for sure this would be a good year and first we lost the female and now the male. You're right Jane, it is like a bad dream. :(

From what I've seen of the location of this nest in pictures and what has been said in posts, this nest is fairly high up. So it doesn't seem that it would be possible for anyone to be trapping and bird-napping these birds. I know that there have been problems with that sort of thing and worse in the UK, but I am hoping that isn't the case here. It is mysterious though.

Red looks pretty settled right now. Does anyone know IF she would attract a male if he would accept the eggs as those he's responsible for or would they renest? Looking at those Flicker feathers in the scrape just tears me up thinking about Caesar. I could sit and cry, but unfortunately that won't do any good. I will never see another Flicker that I don't think of all of Greg's reports regarding the feather assortment. All of this has to be a bad dream that we need awakened from.

JANE, I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING TODAY ABOUT THE FLICKER FEATHERS, BUT DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING AND THE ONE WAS STANDING STRAIGHT UP LIKE A FLAG SALUTING POOR CAESAR. I'M SO READY TO WAKE UP FROM THIS BAD DREAM. AND TO THINK THE EXCITEMENT WE HAD WHEN WE FIRST LEARNED OF RED GIRL THERE IN WILMINGTON. I HOPE SHE MAKES US ALL REAL HAPPY REAL SOON SHOWING US SHE CAN HANDLE ALL THIS TURMOIL!

I am SO totally there with you Jane, Reenie, & Kim. These past few days I have shed so many tears. You know, my family wouldn't even understand if I told them. Sometimes I think I'm too sensitive, especially with wild life. I ask a prayer out loud in church today for the Gulf Coast & am saying prayers for Red Girl. It's too much to understand, how this could happen.

Another dumb question, but have decoy falcons ever been used? What I'm thinking is putting up a decoy with food by it, in hopes Red would come to it for food if and when the eggs hatch. It would have to be at a place where HELPFUL humans could supply the food. Maybe she'd soon figure out it's not real, though. Decoys have been used on some islands off the coast of Maine to reestablish Puffin colonies, with great success. Believe me, I'm racking my brain about all of this.

That's a very intersting idea, Jane!!! Would she see the "dummy" falcon as a threat, though? Would she use prey if it were left in the box? I know we often see the parent remove the food once they are finished with a feed, but occasionally, they will just stash it in the corner of the box.

When the male kestrel in Italy was killed last year, food was put in the box to help Rebecca feed her babies, & as far as I know, it worked...
