I think just a simple nest exchange again, but lots of talking about it.

This is the one that came in to relieve, should have seen the one leaving. Sorry, I was too involved to get that one.

thanks for moving this, I could never find it before! There has been some heated discussion as to the possibility of a second female at this nest. One viewer seems to think the juvenile from last year has come back and is helping the mom hatch the eggs, or at least thinks there are 3 different birds seen here. I wish the biologists would dispel this myth, it has caused quite a few viewers to stop posting observations.

Hi Mac! I sure hope everything stays calm at this nest. If Feisty is back, we cam viewers should be able to recognize her quite easily cause she would have her sub-adult plumage. We have been watching a nest at the University of Montreal where one of last year's juvies is still in the area & is quite close to her parents, but she is showing no interest in their 4-egg clutch other than the eggs are inconveniencing her cause she can't lay in the box like she's used to doing. She's getting to be a real problem cause she's causing the eggs to be unincubated for periods of time. I'll get the link for you & post it here:

that is great information so at least this woman will know it is possible that 3 falcons can be at the same site but unlikely and the juvenile is so much different in coloration she would not be mistaken as an adult. I didn't want to hurt her feelings but maybe the link to that cam will help her make up her own mind as to what she thought she saw.

I think that would be a good idea! Sub-adults also sound different from adults, like juvies (& I've just learned that this year from watching a couple of nests), so since the Maine cam has sound, a sub-adult can be differentiated from an adult by their call. In fact, they apparently still sound like a juvie when they're 2, at least Red at Wilmington does.

Also, this sub-adult has been allowed to stick around by her parents because she had a leg injury last year, so she never left. If a juvie left & tried to come back, they may not be allowed to stay.

typical day at the Maine scrape, just sitting patiently keeping eggs safe and warm.

I am just over the moon for this pair! They've been through so much the past few years and they gave us such a wonderful little chick last year, they really deserve this!

And to everyone who campaigned for a new nest box last year, you should all be proud as your efforts have paid off big time :spingirl: :eastergirl:

I'm with you, Carly--I'm so happy that this looks like a good nesting season for this pair!

Thanks for the new baby pics, Mac!

I was just in town and drove right by the nest site and wanted ever so badly to stop and watch for parents bringing prey to the chicks. I didn't see one pigeon anywhere near, a few seagulls looked mighty scared though... Some day I'll get brave and stop and take a photo of the outside of the site looking in from the road. It is just a bad place to stop for anything.

this is not my photo but I found one online that shows where the nest site is. There are those round things the cam looks out over and against the wall you can see the holes where the nest site is located, and the stairs and other railings.Image
it is at the base of the drawbridge section and those openings are on both sides of the bridge so there are 4 openings in all. The falcon scrape is on the side facing the north.

a view looking down from the top of the bridge showing those round bumper things the nest looks out on to. It is this side that the nest faces, the old ferry terminal and the bay area. You can see both of the round bumper things so now you can picture the falcons below you in the little cubby hole nest, not accessible from land (that I know of) Not as high off the water as I would think they would prefer but very safe. I have no idea how that red squirrel got in there earlier in the week. Must have come down from the top of the bridge.
