DNR seeking person who shot falcon

By Teresa Stowell of the Daily Times staff
Tuesday, November 30, 2010 12:49 PM CST

An injured peregrine falcon was found in the city of Watertown last week and taken to an area animal rehabilitation center. Wildlife officials are searching for the person who may have shot the endangered species.

Department of Natural Resources warden Dave Walz said the bird was shot through the wing and was unable to fly although no bones were broken in the wing. The bird was rescued by a local resident who found it wounded and took it to the Wildlife in Need center located outside of Oconomowoc. The falcon will be rehabilitated at the center and released after a full recovery.

Peregrine falcons are a large, crow-sized falcon, with a blue-gray back, barred white underparts and a black head and “moustache.” The falcon injured was a two-year-old female. It was banded by wildlife officials near the Mississippi River where it was born. By tracking and monitoring the bird through its band, Walz said officials know that it raised young near the Mayfair Mall in Milwaukee over the summer.

Although the shooting of a peregrine falcon is unusual in the city, Walz said there have been many instances of local residents shooting at hawks during the winter.

“A lot of people don't like hawks hanging around their songbird feeders, so they tend to be easy targets for shooting,” Walz said. “We're not sure what exactly happened to this bird, but we've had people shoot birds for that similar reason.”

Walz said peregrine falcons are listed as an endangered species at the state and the federal level. Walz said the intentional shooting of the bird can carry a hefty fine.

Those who may know more about the bird shooting are asked to call Walz at 262-9508. They can also contact the local police department or call the DNR hotline.

Genoa

When I read the article about the female peregrine who had been found shot in Watertown, Wisconsin, I posted over on RRP that I thought this could well be Jesse, the resident female at the Mayfair Mall nest. I sent an e-mail to the Wildlife in Need Center asking about her band number, but the mail came back as undeliverable.

According to an update, the falcon who has been in care at the Wildlife in Need Center in Oconomowoc is indeed Jesse from the Genoa nest, born in 2008 (banded black/green K/77). She and her mate Polyo, born in 2007 at the Port Washington Generating Station, banded black/green E/65, raised four chicks this year, two males and two females. She is a daughter of Scooter (banded black/red U/W), who was the long-time female at the Genoa nest, and Lucas (banded black/green 40/N), born at the Alma nest in 2004. Scooter was killed by Jezebel in 2009.

An update on Jesse:

Another leg has been added to the journey home for “Jesse” the Peregrine Falcon

The Wildlife In Need Center will transfer the Falcon to world-renowned Raptor Center of Minnesota
for further expert care

Oconomowoc, Wisconsin - December 15, 2010 - On Saturday the 20th of November a large trash receptacle arrived at the Wildlife In Need Center from Watertown, Wisconsin. Inside the receptacle was a Peregrine Falcon that had been rescued from the side of the road. The injury is suspected to have been a result of a gunshot but has healed well through supportive care. Her initial release had to be postponed due to some damaged feathers and she is now on her way to the Raptor Center of Minnesota, a world-renowned care facility specializing in birds of prey, for follow-up care.

Peregrine populations plummeted in the mid-20th century especially from the East Coast into the Midwest. Although their numbers have risen in recent years, so much so that they were recently removed from the Federal Endangered Species List, they are still considered Endangered and of Critical Concern in the state of Wisconsin. Although reports come in annually, Peregrines are still not a common sight in most counties across the state.

This particular bird was also banded giving us a unique look into where she’d come from before needing the Wildlife In Need Center. According to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service this bird was hatched in Genoa, Wisconsin in 2008. There, she was banded and nicknamed “Jesse.” This year she hatched and raised 4 young birds in the WE energies nest box at the Mayfair Mall site in Milwaukee.

Although she’s already traveled some great distances in her life, the rehabilitation process will be her most triumphant. The very first leg of her journey to recovery was an X-ray followed by two weeks of supportive care. Due to the injury, some of Jesse’s feathers were broken and during her stay several more were damaged making her immediate release no longer possible. The Raptor Center has not only agreed to take Jesse into their care to perform a procedure called “imping” which will replace the missing feathers, but they have also offered to pay the costs involved with the transfer of the bird. If the surgery goes well we will work with the Raptor Center to determine the best timeline for transferring Jesse back to Wisconsin and ultimately her release back to the wild.

She is a very beautiful falcon. It is very generous of The Raptor Center to pay the costs to transfer her there, and they have a great deal of experience with imping, so this is a good place for her to be.

Thanks for the info on Jesse Alison. Imping is not that big a deal in the scheme of things, which is great news! The Raptor Center should have her up and ready to go. Lucky for her she's got the best care possible. It is amazing that you can keep up so well with all these falcons Alison!

New Hampshire--look who I found! :banasan: Its been so long since I've seen anyone here that I was beginning to think they migrated! I would think that if they had migrated, though, they wouldn't have left the cam on.
