Jan 12, 2010 - First update ( from Mathew R.) of 2010!

This morning I witnessed a falcon crying loudly at the south end of the property. Not sure who it was but it did appear to be an adult and no second falcon was spotted at the time. Clearly, Mom has found somewhere warmer to spend some of her time lately, she's only seen every few days around here.

Secondly, if you're interested I had a cool outing this past weekend at the Leslie Spit on the Toronto waterfront. I found a few Great Horned Owls and otherwise enjoyed the day being outside. Visit the photo blog to see more Owl shots.

Lastly, if you're Canadian, you've likely heard about the uprising against our Prime Minister regarding his self-centered decision to prorogue parliament. I rarely post anything political here, but today I'll make an exception.

I'm very proud to see Canadians of all political affiliations joining the online Facebook group Canadians Against the Proroguing of Parliament and discussing this issue.

We're normally a pretty quiet group of folks, but finally we're speaking up, learning more and getting involved in what our politicians are doing. If you're on Facebook I suggest joining this group, or at least reading some of the info available there.

I'm hopeful this may be the first time that social media will influence democracy in Canada for the better. I will definitely be attending Toronto's January 23rd Rally at Dundas Square. If you're elsewhere in Canada check the Facebook group for rally info in your city.

Update from Mathew -- January 18, 2010:

I happened to check the video feed today and spotted none other than Mr. Jack enjoying a feathered meal on the nest ledge. I also spotted Mom over at the south end earlier this morning.

I do not like how this is playing out. he needs to be at Etobkoke(sp) and the original male needs to be released.
maybe Jack injured the original male.

No drama please.

Update from Mathew...
Feb 4, 2010 - Two adults - a regular day...

Every morning so far this week, two adult falcons are being seen at the south end of the property.
They seem to prefer the south end for some reason, not sure how much time they're spending at the
regular nest ledge area but I'm personally not seeing them there much.

Thanks for those updates, Mathew, Beth & Carly. Wish we could get into the minds of our falcons to know and understand the "decisions" they make. I'm sure it is all instinct and hormones and such, but something is driving Jack's hormones which in turn is driving him to spend more time in Toronto. Hmmmmmm. Maybe when Dad gets released he will seek out Angel and everybody will be happy. No fighting though!

Update from Mathew...
Feb 9, 2010 - Houston, have we a problem?

The past few days, the falcons are behaving strangely. I don't know if it's remotely possible (please contact me if you have any insights!), but if I had to guess I'd say Jack and Mom are in courtship mode.

One problem with the current situation is that lately, the location of choice for the falcons is the south end of the building, where I'm forced to stand on the ground and try to guess what the heck is going on above. No camera to observe with, no way to know what's going on within the ledge.

Yesterday, a tandem food run was observed. Today just moments ago (1:15PM), I watched two falcons sitting on different ledges. Next came the tell-tale squawking, the male flew out, came back to the ledge Mom was on, some hoopla ensued (hidden within the ledge), and after about 20 seconds the male flew out again. A bewildered looking female soon peered over the edge of the ledge. Ah yes, memories of matings of years gone by. AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! NO!!! :)

Monitoring continues as possible. Frankly I hope they're just wrestling or something, it seems pretty early in the season to start counting eggs... Right?

**2PM Update** Kathy was kind enough to pass me some additional information. Kathy knows Jack well from the Bloor/Islington site. Kathy says "Jack usually started courting Angel second week of February - the last 2 years I observed anyway. They were always the first site to lay eggs and hatch them out. She usually laid them last week of March with him. Not sure how it will work this year but he was here yesterday morning making all kinds of noises and
they were both in the nestbox for awhile." - Thanks Kathy!

And so, once again we can confirm Jack is a little two-timer, quite the busy boy!

I am sorry CArly that Jack has been untrue to Angel. whatever was he thinking.

but hopefully she can snag another male and Jack will leave him alone. I am still wondering if Jack was the reason the resident male at this site got injured

Thanks for posting Matthew's updates, Beth. I was glad to hear that the original male is doing OK & we don't have to worry about tiercels fighting over Mom for a while.

Feb 16, 2010 - Tuesday Update

Today Kathy, a falcon watcher from the Bloor/Islington site sent me an
update that Jack was seen over at that nest location, so apparently he's okay.

I haven't seen Jack and Mom at our location together since last week. I guess Jack is in the
dog house with at least one of his girlfriends for skipping out on Valentine's day :)

Feb 21, 2010 - Weekend Update

Jack and Mom are both being seen in the area. Jack has also been spotted at Bloor & Islington... the dirty dog :)

If you're interested, there's a 3-part blog post in the Photo Blog, following yet another great trip to Nanticoke.
