I cannot watch or read anything about it. I am completly worn out over bad falcon news. I am so sorry that something had to happen to poor little Solo. :cryinggirl:

I am very sorry too ljames. It must be especially hard for Scott and his crew. What Scott described is disheartening. It hurts.

It was so sad to read the news about Solo's injured leg. If she can't be caught and tended to, I'm hoping that her leg will heal on its own.

We've had more than enough bad news already for 2010.

The latest post...

A brighter day

With Solo’s apparent injury hanging over the Project at the moment it was good to see some happier peregrine activity today. Solo didn’t appear again until around lunchtime but this time she was flying with both parents. On a bright sunny day, with high cloud as a background, we were treated to an amazing flying display way up high by all three peregrines using the strong upper winds to dive, circle and wheel across the sky with each other. This went on for a few minutes at high altitude, Solo nagging and fussing as usual with each parent taking quick swoops at her in what seemed like fun. The breeze took all three birds right over campus and out to the east before they returned again.

Video footage taken later in the sequence shows almost unrecognisable dots unfortunately but it was absolutely wonderful to see all three peregrines doing what peregrines do best; a rarity in these parts. We three observers tried to get a close look at Solo and it may be the distance or the flying angles but her leg didn’t seem to be hanging as badly as it was yesterday. Monitoring continues …

Thank you to everyone for their thoughts, good advice and encouragement. We will let nature play itself out at the moment but are closely watching events and will do what we can.

Yay...encouraging news! Perhaps the video shows her right after injury and a good nights sleep has it on the mend. I'm going to remain positive given her parents are both with her and obviously taking good care of her :flirty:

Right there with you carly :wavingsnowgirl:

I'm glad to hearing encouraging news!
Let's hope solo's injury will heal within weeks and solo is flying well.

Unphased by current human celebrations
Posted on 24-12-2010

Little to report from up in the Concrete Hilton nor in the surrounding trees. Life is going on, Solo is doing her best to adapt to a new way if sitting, but activities such as feeding haven’t changed and we know when food has arrived, when “Little Miss Trouble’s” vocal talents come to the fore. She seems to be OK branch hopping and once off the ground she has full flight capability. How or whether she’ll adapt remains to be seen, but we’ll monitor her over the University campus break (until 4th January) and will be regular visitors in to check on our young charge.
We worry for Santa in his flying sleigh; if he’s been watching the Project then he’ll know not to fly anywhere near campus. If Swift sees him there are going to be traffic control issues and we get this image of broken and ruined presents scattered around the campus grounds after Santa took a high-G turn to avoid a 320km/hr impact with a small but very fast, and very angry, bird….
Best wishes to all, thank you to everyone so much for your interest and support of FalconCam Project in recent times, have a wonderful holiday season and rest assured we’ll be on the case of these peregrines right the way through in to 2011. Cheers all!

I wish her the best. I keep thinking of Dundas (who is related to Durand, now at Columbus) who could catch prey with only one leg.

Thanks for the update, Mick! Sounds like Solo is adapting & that her injury isn't interfering with her eating, so that's encouraging. :snowmancarrot:

I have not checked in here but have been following

Remember the year Mariah hurt her foot and she had youngsters to raise. Kyver took care of her and the kids and she healed by the end of the season.

A little rest and I am sure she will be fine. the parents are still feeding her and she seems ot be doing fine. she can hold her food.

Hey Pru, It is christmas Eve in australia now. I hope you were a good little girl :rudired: :rudired:
Have aone on me :santatoast: :santatoast: :santatoast:

Merry Christmas :merrychristmas: :strungdeer: :santaandsleigh: to all in australia

Sorry to have to post this, still, both feet on the branch sounds hopeful to me.

Solo update
Posted on 24-12-2010

I just saw Solo returning from a flight, with foot still dangling. She went and roosted in a eucalypt tree and had both feet on the branch, although the injured fit did not appear to be gripping as much as the other one. I would have thought, however, that just having the foot in that position would have been difficult if it had been broken, but am not sure. It certainly does not bode well for a ‘solo’ career as she’ll need two strong healthy feet to catch her own prey.
Sorry I didn’t have my camera with me.
Cilla

Thanks, Mick--it does sound hopeful that both feet were on the branch.
