Hey Wizzz, how did the earthquake affect you today? Some in downtown high-rises here in Indianapolis, Indiana felt it!

A provisional diagnosis of what happened with Little Eve, posted on the blog:

"The tentative diagnosis (confirmed by histology for the moment) is: Herpesvirus hepatitis and bacterial pneumonia."

Hi all !

Sorry I haven't checked the forum for a while. Funny enough, when the earthquake happened I was on top of a building downtown, talking with the manager to install a new falcon box. I did not feel a thing, but he did - he told me - hey did you feel that! I guess I'm used to tall buildings that move when you're on top

On the above photos it's Spirit. She's been coming back to the box regularly, and Roger as well. Horus has started to carry preys, I haven't seen any exchange yet, but yesterday he took food from his mom on a ledge and flew to a higher one to eat it.

As for Eve's disease, I don't know much more about this virus except that it was transmitted by a prey. Her immune system was probably weaker than the other falcons so that's why she's the only one who caught it.

thanks Wizzz. :thumbegg: :girlluv:

I am glad that Hourus is doing well. I guess no Polly sightings. that is a puzzle also.

PUBLIC APOLOGY

While searching today for some comforting words by Froona over the death of an adult falcon (Scout of Columbus), I came across another post of hers, and from that post I realized that I needed to make an apology to those who read this thread.

On May 8th I posted this comment:

If there is one very important thing I learned from Froona it was that falcons don't have "feelings" but rather they operate their lives based on hormones which cycle during a season. She helped me to see that S2 of DeMortal was not being rude or mean when she first arrived at that nest; she was just going by what her hormones told her.

While the second sentence IS what Froona believed, I now understand that the first sentence is NOT what Froona felt. Here is the post I found just a few minutes ago, and I owe it to you and to Froona to make this right. Here are her true thoughts on the subject of avian feelings:

Posted by Froona - April 25, 2008 - Richmond, VA:

"These are sensient creatures. They are extremely intelligent. They can remember things, they have a kind of thinking. And when you listen to peregrines, they do greeve, are angry, tender.

". . . I once saw in the lake in front of my house how a waterbird disposed of an egg with a dead emebryo. It was very upsetting and will never forget it. She was very distressed and was screaming and stayed that way all day. Birds do have feelings and a soul. I am so very sure of that."

So, please accept my apology for misquoting Froona. I'm actually rather relieved to know that Froona felt that birds have feelings. :girlluv: The whole hormone thing being the driver was even hard for me to believe.
