We are very happy to have received a snapshot from our legendary AURORA - the first falcon to discover our nestbox on Holy-Spirit-Church in 1999 after 47 years absence of peregrine-falcons in Heidelberg - cleaning her middle claw , october, 29th near her new residence (chimney 1,500 mtrs west of Holy-Spirit Church)! We identify her by her blue band. AURORA - banded in 1997 in Southern Germany - raised 27 chick in nestbox Heiliggeistkirche, then moved with new tiercel PHÖNIX to Römerkreis-Chimney to raise FROONA in 2009 and another chick (unnamed) in 2010, a total of 29. So we are looking forward to next months! :dancing3:

When we were young we looked even better! :prolleye:
Here you can admire AURORA in flight! (Photo from 2005 by courtesy Bernd Zoller)
Watching wild peregrine falcons since 1965 I say: This is the most beautiful one I have seen since then... :-)

Indeed, the photo of sailing AURORA is on a booklet on raptors of German "NABU" i.e. a nature-protecting organization!
PERKEO and I look into a rainy sky today, but it is still warm in Heidelberg.

Medal of Honour
Some weeks ago the mayor of Heidelberg Dr. Eckart Würtzner handed me a Medal of Honour "Bürgermedaille" appreciating in the name of Heidelberg City Council my efforts in restauration of wild-living Peregrine falcons in the city and region. He expressed the gratitude of the community for my 42 years of volunteer working as a "Naturschutzwart" -i.e. sort of Ranger- especially concerned for the protection of birds of preys. As a former principal of local Geschwister-Scholl-Schule my achievements in recruiting students for this nature-work were praised by the mayor and guests in warm words...

Thank you for your friendly congratulations!
Yes, I am a little bit proud... :-)
I answered the laudatio: "Sure it has been a lot of work in all these years, but the falcons give me back such a lot of wonderful sights and pleasure! I want to share this experience with other nature-lovers..."
(Of course I said this in GERMAN!)
Happy christmas and a good falcon-season in 2011!
Hans-Martin
