You know me I am the optimist but Polly has to be chased away by parents. She appears to be getting too comfortable and this will not bide well for Spirit. this is my opinion, but ....

We have seen juveniles take over nest sites!!!!!!!

by the way, I would love to be wrong here.

I find it really surprising as well that Spirit is not chasing Polly away because she has no problem doing it with other females ! She's a young and strong female (only 6yrs old) so I'm sure that when the time will come she will do what is required....
Here's the link for a video of this morning :
Yes Polly tried to incubate the eggs twice ! :-) I really hope that they hatch I am so curious to see what she will do with the chicks...

Thanks for the video, Wizzz! She was already in the box when I tuned in, so I missed the beginning. Well, since her mothering instincts are kicking in, I'm hoping that its a sign that she will welcome her brothers & sisters & help care for them. Maybe she'll even leave the area with some of them when its time & she can help them & they can help her. Hopefully, next year she will have a mate & he can help her hunt!

Nice thoughts Nancy ... it is fascinating to observe how she is tolerated/accepted around the nest - must be because of her disability - peregrines really do "break the mould" when it comes to predictable behavior :egghatch: .

If I am looking at the archives correctly, looks like a parent was on them at 7:47, then made an attempt to get to them at 9:06. Worrisome.

Boy, isn't that the truth! We're seeing all kinds of behavior this year that we thought we'd never see!
:?

Yeah Polly was in the box for a long time this morning !! She was mostly lying beside the eggs but at some point she had 2 under her. I think Spirit was away - Roger tried to sit on the eggs twice but Polly was standing over them. Spirit came back in the box with some food, she started eating it but finished outside the box. Then she came to sit on the eggs and Polly was right there beside her for quite some time as you can see in the previous screenshots... At first Spirit did not seem to like that Polly was so close but then she had both her eyes closed so I think she wasn't too worried!!

This afternoon Polly was napping in "her" second box.

Hope there won't be any damage to the eggs, I guess we'll know in 10 days...!

It seems like Roger and Spirit are managing this as well as they could. Polly is something else. Hopefully we will see hatches here...I'm thinking positively.

Polly was in the box this morning. In the first pic, she was at least shading the eggs from the sun; in the second it looks like she was semi-incubating them. Looks like she was there about her usual half-an-hour.

I was at UdeM for several hours yesterday. I saw when Polly came in the box. The parents both came to check out on her, of course it's hard to know what is going on in their head but to me it seemed like they thought she was incubating the eggs. Usually Roger tries to get in, but not this time, and Spirit did not try either - maybe because she was covering the eggs with her tail ?

I took photos of Spirit - lucky for me she was flying quite low at the 10th floor (nest is at 23rd)...
