Wow - was it really?! I was wondering about that plus the thought went thru my head that Havoc would be more inclined to just make a scrape on the ledge of the water tower again as he first did all those years ago before they installed the first box & they only installed the box because the eggs were rolling off!!! Oh Dear!

That thought crossed my mind, too, although I didn't know that he had done that before! Nice to see you again regularly, Pru! :spingirl:

Thanks for the info Pru. I didn't know that there had been eggs laid on the tower either, but I did actually mention that in one of the e-mails or responses that I sent to the site, that I was afraid that would happen. Well, now that I know it actually has happened, I am really concerned. Boy, I sure hope this all turns out ok. I do wish they would turn the cam on, that way we could be on the lookout for them. It would be hard to get thru the fall and winter without Alcoa.

Yep - there could be a whole lot of housework going on! :o :sofa

But let's just hope they keep us updated as to how it's playing out even if they don't turn the cam on.

Oh no, now I'm worried that S&H will nest at a vulnerable location on the tower where their eggs might roll off, but if they do it should send a strong message that S&H know best where they need to be and that the stand-alone box is simply inferior. Like ljames said, I would really hate to miss watching this nest this year.

I wonder if they would reconsider replacing the box at the tower if it looks like S&H are going there -- no matter what. Alcoa will not have gained safety for their employees -- only disrupted the PFs. I know it is all "what ifs" and we'll have to wait, but I'm going to speculate anyway.

:hi: SusanE - nah I also thought that if S&H do try that, that Alcoa will put all that bunting all over the water tower too to deter them as they obviously do not want them around the plant any longer - probably had a big pow wow with all the employees & came to the decision which resulted in this odd box arrangement - plus that scientist, Barry, did say last year that he was having other boxes installed around the property as well - so they will just keep deterring them fr the tower & hoping they will take up at least one of the other boxes - they have gone to quite a bit of effort to get them away fr the plant already so I think they will just keep sticking with that.

p.s. luv yr Rachel Carson quote :smilesun:

Our biologist had to change a nest box location in Edmonton this year and had to make old site very unattractive to peregrines.
the pair did dago to new location

On the other hand, look at Mariah. she tried to remove the netting from the Kodak tower.

I will go back now and see where this box is.Is the location a good one
???

Why would they not consult with the biological(I forget her name) that was there a few years ago. she went on maternity leave,

she would have surely informed them that this is not a good solution. I would liked to see some picutres of whole area surrounding box.

The biologist's name is Elise, & she was active there last year. Hopefully, she's still there...

thanks Nancy. I should have remembered that as I e-mailed her enough. My brain is still fried.

I remember reading about poor Mariah. It seems that when they took her nest away, it was the beginning of the end for her. She tried and tried desparately to get to it and then her mate didn't return and her new mate died, all the while she would not accept any of the new nests. Then came the battle with the new female and her injury and rehab. I think in the end she recovered but did not nest again.

I think I have the events right, but feel free to correct, if not.

A bad decision, although maybe a necessary one, had a devastating effect on Mariah's life. I sure hope things turn out better here.

I think you have the events right, ljames...I remember watching the cam and seeing Mariah try and get past the nets to get to her nesting site...it was heartbreaking to watch...I often wonder how she is doing...I haven't read any updates on her in Imprints in quite a while..

I think its gonna be interesting to see if S & H even accept this box...remember how stubborn the Richmond pair were!!! they kept trying to go back to the dangerous ledges..I wouldn't be surprised if these two aren't trying to nest on one of the towers there...

I think this location is probably okay (maybe not for S & H ). At least there are trees and we don't know what's in front of the box...I think about how remote Cobb is (that box is barely off the ground and not a tree/building in sight) and they do just fine!!!

Fingers crossed that somebody shows up to this box...I sure do wish they would turn the cam on so that at least we can monitor it. Beth went back and looked at last year, and the cam was already (unofficially) on Mid-July!!!!...so you know they are already bonding~somewhere!!!

thanx for the egg info & link Beth - plus when I saw those pics again I wondered if anyone can zoom in on Alcoa with google earth & try to see the tower??? Maybe we could see if they have decorated it with that bunting too?? I don't think I can get the most recent google earth pics - do you have to pay for that (or be a spy agency or something - ha ha!)???
