Hi, All! Mike and I (from Jersey City and 101 Hudson) visited your lovely city on our way to see Phung Luu at the Tri State benefit. Mike was in awe of the scrape and surrounding area. We found peregrine prey remains on the sidewalk underneath the scrape. But that was the closest we got to seeing any falcons. Of course it was in the hot afternoon when everyone was snoozing. We went up to the top of the garage and surveyed the area. Jealousy raged. We have to watch from two blocks away and up 40 stories. And we have to constantly humor the security people who don't want us taking pictures. We have gotten official permission, but it is a secret apparently.

We will be down your way again as soon as our Jersey City guy begins flying and going out in public. Mr. Luu and his associate are amazing people. Birds are lucky to be in their care.

Glad you got to visit in downtown Wilmington, Bonnie. Yes, that nest site is a prime piece of real estate for the falcons. I cannot imagine trying to do a falcon watch from 40 stories up!

HEY BONNIE, ISN'T IT WONDERFUL? SORRY YOU DIDN'T GET TO SEE ANY OF THE FALCONS, IT'S ALWAYS A GREAT THING TO SEE THEM FLYING AROUND OR THE JUVIES SCREAMING AND CHASING THE PARENTS :-)

HOPE YOUR GUY DOES WELL! I COULDN'T TAKE 40 STORIES UP, I'M SCARED OF HEIGHTS! WOW! AND TWO BLOCKS AWAY? WOW AGAIN!

The birds are 40 stories up. We are on the ground or maybe the 7th floor of the garage two blocks away.

Wilington is very much like San Jose and Rochester. Actually like when the birds were on the Kodak Tower in Rochester.

I'm also glad you and Mike got to see the Wilmington falcon box & surrounding area. Too bad you didn't get to see any of the falcons. I was there a few weeks ago for the first time & thought the birds & people were very lucky to have a nice area like that! :thumbegg:

Hi! Yep, I couldn't help but feel envious of the watchers at this site after being there! In addition to going back down to see Legs with Mr. Luu, I also want to come back there next season at least once during fledge watch!

The sidewalk was interesting for sure, lol We saw the head of a Yellow-billed Cuckoo (ID'd with help from Kim; I felt kinda bad about sending her that pic, but she's a good sport). We also saw 2 objects that sure looked like pellets! I think I've only seen a falcon cough up one of those once, so that was a treat (in a way). Oh, and there's actually a building near the scrape that literally looks like a smaller, lighter-colored version of JC's 101 Hudson!! I got such a kick out of that!

We drove across the Girard Point bridge on the way back north, where, if I remember right, RG's Mom fledged from in 1998. So even though we didn't see any falcons, there was a sense of history in the air. :thumbup

I thought the lookalike building looked more like a hybrid 101 Hudson and 10 Exchange Place in JC. Great area for falcons if they can stay away from the windows and off the ground. It seemed tough for a falcon to actually get to the ground there. Lots of low buildings to land on and rest.

Bonnie and Mike - I'm so glad you got to make a side trip to the Wilmington nest site on your way to the Tri-State event on Saturday, but I'm so sorry that you didn't get to see any of the falcons while you were there.

You're right that the roof of the garage opposite the Brandywine Building is a nice setup for watching the nest box and the falcons, just like the grassy area across from the Rachel Carson Building in Harrisburg is great for watching the falcons there. I can't imagine what it must be like to have to look up 40 stories to see your falcons in Jersey City, not to mention being two blocks away and having to deal with the security people!

I hope you'll let us know when you come back to the area again.

A post WELCOME to Wilmington Bonnie and Mike! Yes, We do have a nice place to view the nest box. Thanks to the Falcon's for picking that building to nest on! I, like the others, can't imagine having to crane your neck to watch 40 floors up!! UGG! But you do it for the love of them.
Good sidewalk inspections. LOL! Greg does that for us on his way to work.

Next season we want to see you here and spend some time on the roof!

Glad "Mr. Legs" is still doing well. What dedication to watch over these birds.

Mike, your so right about Mom in HBG and the Girard Point Bridge. Talk about Falcon history, look how we are all tied together because of them. For the LOVE of FALCON'S!!

Cuckoo head was still on the sidewalk this morning. I won't count it again. A freshly-plucked mourning dove feather which I will count as a new victim.

Don't know how to treat a dead, whole cicada in the same spot. I guess it could have flown into the building and died. Or a kid peregrine may have caught it, carried it home and dropped it. One year they were catching and eating dragonflies.

Thanks for the welcome, all

Yes, JC gives the neck quite a workout, lol But like all nest sites, it's so worth it when one sees these incredible birds in flight!

Thanks for the sidewalk report, Greg! Did you see what we thought were pellets? There were 2 of them, to the right of where the cuckoo head was....

Mike, yes, they are pellets.

Falcon pellets usually are not as informative as owl pellets, but eight years ago I found the foot of an American kestrel sticking out of one on the same sidewalk you're talking about. A week earlier a male kestrel had been giving the old female peregrine a really hard time, diving straight at her head as she perched on a Brandywine Building ledge (around the curve from the nest box). The next morning the kestrel was still flying around making noise but looked weird because he had lost his tail. I thought "Dude, just stay out of that bar" but I guess he didn't hear me.

I'm so glad that Kim made it to Columbia & was rewarded with seeing both kids & an adult! Weather is better today than its been in a week, so this is a good day to be outside. Bet we'll see some pics from Kim, if she was able to take any camera equipment in the kayak. :clapegg:

Wow! Way to go Kim. Great you got to see them!! Thanks for letting us know through Reenie. That is awesome!

Greg thanks for the updated report from Bonnie and Mike. You confirmed all they found and then some.

We were coming through Wilm. this afternoon about 3:30 P.M. and were crossing the Bridge over the Brandywine near the Zoo. Flying above us just a little in front of our view was one of the Falcon's. I was so excited. They do like that area. The angle of the sun made the under part look tan colored. Of course with driving the car, how long could I look? LOL First time that ever happened. Whoohoo!

Wow, Greg!! I feel bad for the Kestrel but can't help but chuckle at that. What's that old saying, you play with fire, you're gonna get burned! :sunblink:
