Memories of New Girl
This beautiful falcon is gone much too soon. We scarcely had a chance to get to know her, and to appreciate all her great qualities. I had hoped to watch her raise chicks with Lil Dad for many years to come.
And yet, suddenly it seemed, she was very ill. With great courage, she had masked her illness for as long as she could, but there came a time when she was too ill to hide her condition any longer.
Even then, she continued to watch over her chicks. Lil Dad, who knew how ill she was, continues to care for the chicks, as she knew he would. Wherever she went when she disappeared, it would not have been far from the nest. She would not have left her beloved chicks and her devoted mate.
It was heartbreaking to see her so desperately ill, and to be unable to help her. She showed the very highest level of courage, and that is part of her legacy. Like all the great ones, she will not be forgotten. Her memory will remain with each of us, with her chicks, and with Lil Dad. I hope in the future we will be able to see Lil One and this year’s two beautiful boys with nests of their own.
NG was a great mother, very protective of her chicks, and a fine mate for Lil Dad. She was very beautiful, with exquisite markings and a proud, elegant demeanor. It took very little time to become deeply attached to her. I will miss her greatly.
According to one Native American belief, NG has travelled along the path of stars to meet the Great Spirit. She did not deserve to leave us so soon – but the very least she deserves is a path of stars, or a path of diamonds, to light her way.
She lived her life with grace, dignity, bravery and honor.
