Evanston

I found some very sad news about one of the Evanston juvies posted on their forum. Poor little Marigold - what a terrible way to lose her.

And a sighting of a 2008 Evanston juvie:

Bad news first: Mary H sent an email a little while ago informing us that on August 12th our Marigold was found dead in a backyard in Ringle, WI. Her suspected cause of death was from eating poisoned prey (a horrible death).

The good news: Our Neal's namesake from 2008 is believed to be the resident male at the St Mary's Church site.

I'm pasting a copy of Mary's email below so you'll know everything I know:

Hi!

Sorry to have to tell you but Marigold (b/r 34/W) was brought in dead to a rehab facility in Wisconsin. The bird was found dead in a residential backyard in Ringle, WI on August 12. They are not sure what she died from but suspect it may have been from ingesting poisoned prey. That's all I know.

On the good side, we believe that the male Peregrine at St. Mary's Hospital is Neal (b/r *U/*W - 2008 Evanston). Last year at St. Mary's I suspected it was Neal but didn't want to say anything until we could try and confirm it. The problem is the red portion of the band is faded to the point where it is virtually unreadable. Stephanie took some great photos this year and looking at them up close and considering what choices there are with what you can see, we are pretty sure (99%) that's it's Neal. I've attached 2 of the nice photos for you. Anyway, if Isabel comes to town and can run some genetic testing for us, we could say for sure (100%) since we have both Neal's DNa and blood samples from the St. Mary's chicks in 2011 & 2012.

So. sorry about Marigold but way cool about Neal.

Mary

The loss of our Marigold brings home the 70 - 80% mortality rate of urban-fledged first year Peregrines. (This was a statistic Mary H once cited to me.) Death by poisoned prey could happen to any hunter or scavenger. No doubt her killer was slowed down by the poison in its system and was thus an easy target for Marigold. Poison: The killer that keeps on killing right up the food-chain.

Let's hope that if Marigold and Gribley were still together, she hadn't let him share the fatal meal, or that he didn't consume any of her leftovers.

I posted a tribute photo on our group web-page.

We are happy to report that all three wild Peregrine Falcons that hatched in a nest in downtown Boise successfully fledged this year. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game’s fledge-watching team, which recently disbanded for the season, reports that the young birds were vigorous and strong in July and August, despite the challenges of exceptional heat, thick smoke from wildfires, and a rather hands-off parenting style by the parents. Soon the young birds will disperse to eventually set up territories and raise families of their own.

Many volunteers participated in the fledge-watch effort, spending hours in the sweltering heat to follow the birds’ movements and monitor their safety. Team leader Anna Ravegum Taaffe and her assistant, Ryan Carpenter, had to rescue a fledgling only once this year. That’s quite an improvement, compared with previous years.

Thank you for your interest in our falconcam. The webcam is now offline until next spring, but we hope you will enjoy this slideshow
featuring images of the fledglings supplied by local photographers.

We also are grateful to the fledge-watch volunteers, downtown businesses, and our partners, Fiberpipe and Idaho Department of Fish and Game, for another successful year with the Peregrine Falcons in downtown Boise.
