Bill and I got there around 8:50 AM -MAK and Carol P. were on watch. Orion had 2 feedings prior to our getting there so there wasn't much action. He preened, stretched, laid down, walked to end of alcove wall and back-all under the watchful eye of mom and dad who were bookends on OCSR. At 11:30, Carol, MAK and I decided to go get some lunch takeout and Bill (not hungry) was left in charge of the watch. I was standing by the restaurant waiting for Carol & MAK to come back from Tim Horton's (BR break) when I heard Orion screaming and there was a flyover by Beauty which got O all excited. He did a little wing flapping at that time but more squawking as B landed on top of the backside of Times Square. He then settled down in the shade by the main cam for quite a while. All of a sudden, around 1 PM, B took off fast and the watchers (Brian was with us now with many others stopping by) thought they saw 2 females flying and one swoop on the other but then Beauty came flying in landing on the middle of the alcove wall ledge. She spread her wings and tail feathers very wide, almost like defensive posture or protective-very hard to say. It even puzzled Carol and MAK. Then Beauty walked the wall towards Orion who seemed to be cowering in front of her-no vocalizing. It was hard to see from our vantage point what was going on but people watching the streaming video said Orion looked "submissive" and someone posted it looked like she wanted him to fly. After, the watchers thought that maybe Pigott had flown into the city and Beauty was being protective but then they thought maybe it was just B and DC flying when they thought there were 2 females-it was too fast to really know. I was surprised by the number of people walking by asking if the baby had fledged yet or "what are you looking at" and looking through our binocs to get a peek! We left around 1:30 because the heat was getting to me but it was fun spending time with friends and Falcons!
Great report, Kris. . if you'll scroll up a bit, I posted video of a small part of the incident you are describing. .Mr. O was vocalizing a lot!!!
