(Joyce): Drove around back of bldg to find pefa plucking feathers. It's DC on SE corner. P flew past whining, landing on SE corner

(Joyce): Then P went to SW corner.DC dropped food off to P, stayed few seconds and is now on SE corner while P is eating

Thanks for the tweets, Kris. Can't believe this young Dotca has taken on such a huge responsibility. At least there aren't little ones at the other site, especially this year while he's learning.

Wonderful to hear that baby has already been fed several times today & obviously DC is hooked on this "daddy" business! He appears to be trying to learn the finer points of feeding a chick!

So DotCa has another family? Oh boy, I have been out of the loop here... Who is P?

thanks carly. I remember a little about a 2nd female after Unity died, but I think when the new topic was created, I somehow was not subscribed any longer. And with all the other nests, I overlooked it.

1:10PM - There he goes, taking the food again...

Now I have to wonder - Maybe B is hunting while she's on break? She comes in with food and DC stashes?

Looked like she wanted to keep the food that time, but wasn't forceful enough.

Well, at least Baby is sleeping and isn't screaming because she's hungry.

From reading the back comments, realize Baby had a good feed.

Looking back at my post, and just hearing DC whining, maybe he needs to think he's bringing the food in. He's okay when he makes the delivery. When B brings it in and he's on duty, he takes it from her. Maybe it's some kind of ritual (don't want to call it a custom, it's not really a ritual, as much as it's Dad's responsibility to be the provider during this time & maybe DC feels he needs to bring food for family?).

Okay, he was just on the little side platform, and I think he has food. So maybe that's how it works with them? He just flew away. And comes back to box with food a few seconds later. Leaves again.

Or he wants to do the feeding?

Some thoughts posted yesterday on the Forum:

This is just my opinion, but I think Dot has been bringing in food. Beauty is taking it for a snack for herself, coming back with it and giving it to Dot to cache.  For whatever reason she believes it's not time to feed baby yet. 

The feeding that just happened was similar. Dot brought the food. Beauty left with it then came back. This time baby was up & ready & got fed to bursting.

I think-again, my opinion-we're just seeing a variation in behavior consistent with a singleton hatch in June.  We're accustomed to a 2+ hatch in May.  We've often commented over the years about the "little one in back" not being fed this meal, but trying to remember he'll get fed the next time. Dot is providing as if there are more, Beauty knows how much baby actually needs right now. I wonder how much an individual hatchling actually eats at any given multi-hatch feeding? Probably not as much as we assume.

He's talking all sweet nothings and she's got her back turned to him. Funny.

Oops.. Food fight in the box.

Yep. He wants in. Until he gets a chance to be with Baby & feed, he's NOT letting her have that food.



ETA: Dotca was next to main cam, chirping/chupping to Beauty. She was in box, covering eyas, with her back to him. He approached, entered box, Beauty took food, he went to take it back. They both tugged food to other side of box. Dotca obviously won that round. Wonder how long before he comes back again.
