Here is the latest report from our Hamilton crew:
Wednesday, May 30, 2012 - Our chicks have reached that toddler stage where they make the transition from shuffling around on their haunches to walking upright on those oversize feet. Not the easiest thing to get the hang of. The photo at left, taken at 06:36 today, shows how much they have grown from the fluffball stage just a few weeks ago. We can see the lines of coloured feathers starting to grow in, especially when they stretch their wings. The standing up and flapping combo is still pretty tricky...often resulting in a beak plant, but they are getting the knack. As their feathers grow in they will spend more and more time on all important preening, grooming and tending to their feathers. They sleep an awful lot but never miss a meal, as you can see on camera when one of the adults turns up with food. The chicks of course don't know that they're going to have visitors tomorrow. Stay tuned!

I can't get this cam. :egg15: Had hoped to get pics of the guys on the nest picking up the chicks. Maybe they turned it off. Looking forward to hearing the results and band numbers.

I can't get this cam this morning, either. I was hoping to see part of the banding.

I just got the cam. Looks like the chicks are back in the nest, or they have not left it, yet; cannot see enough to tell. Will have to wait for news.

Great photo sequence, Hanny. I am sure that Serge and Madame remember how these intruders show up every year about this time, but they still don't like it. I think that was Madame who looked very angry; she is a very intimidating falcon, as she should be, especially when these humans show up at her home.

CBC News in Hamilton reported on the banding. All three chicks are male! Here is the story:

Just an additional note, in the CBC News story, in case anyone misses it: the very good-natured guy who scaled the hotel got his shirt ripped up by Madame. You can see the holes! That Madame, what a falcon - may she live long and prosper!

Thank you so much, Hanny, for capturing those images. Were you able to get the cam live or are these from the archives? Wish they would post band numbers.

Thank goodness you were able to get the cam, Hanny, and that you are such an experienced picture-taker. :egg7:

It is interesting that at least two (maybe all 3) of these chicks were banded with their black VID bands on their right legs this time.

:omg karissasmom, that video was unbelievable. It really puts you right there as if you are the one being dive-bombed by Madame X. Did you attend the banding? (I see you are from Hamilton.)
