Just got back from another call out to Weber. The caller advised that the falcon chick was dead on the 5th level of the parkade. As Gord could not go, I went down to check and make sure and to retrieve the bird if in fact is was dead. I found the bird. Turns out it was a grebe. The two adults were on top of the Weber building and the young chick I found on the 6th level window ledge in the NW corner of the building. He was still wet from the storm, but obviously had another flight as Bev had left him on the 5th level last night. Everyone is healthy and doing fine (except for the grebe of course. He was supposed to be someones lunch).

Although your heart stops a little when you get these calls, it is good in that more people are becoming aware. We had put up posters in the area and obviously people are reading them and looking.

On the way back I stopped in to see Bev at U of A. She and her other volunteer were sunning themselves on the grass in front of College Plaza. Many people are stopping and wondering why someone is suntanning on a busy street at the university and they are probably sorry they stopped as my wife bends their ear and gives them (sometimes a not so quick) education on falcons.

In any event, the youngster took another flight and wanted to get to CP but couldn't quite make it to the top. He circled over the extension building and then back over the parkade with the adults in hot pursuit. He flew around the parkade and eventually came back and landed on the extension building (which is right next to CP) no worse for wear. Still hasn't been fed a whole bunch but I'm sure that will all take place in time. So we have chicks at both places flying and doing fine.

Peter and Bev, thank you so much for the updates. I am sorry about the grebe - they are beautiful birds too - but I am glad the chick is okay, and that everything is going well at U of A too.

july12 day time report. clinical science

well to say my nails are gone, is the least of my worries. :nailbite: :nailbite: Peter has reported about the the 2 flights. the first one was awful, but he was dripping wet.

The second one was a long one and because he is stubborn, and wanted to go up to college plaza he did many circles. When he went out past parkade my heart was fluttering :nervous: as I did not want him to end up on whyte ave. Then the parents turned him and he flew right over me. I could almost touch him. Thank goodness for Rosemarie , as she was my calming influence. Radisson was hot on his heels . He tried to get up to top of extension building but slid down to next level.
That is so hard to watch. I immediately phoned the maintenance of the building to get them to lock roof door for 2 weeks. We had problems last year.

But just after 1 , he was hungry and decided to take off again but he had no steam. He ended up right clsoe to Maggie and I on parkade roof ledge. We thought he was below on ground at first and I picked up box and ran and Rosemarie , who just leaving, saw him on ledge.

We managed to keep people away from him and Maggie went down below in case he flew across and I stayed top to see where he would fly.

We could see he was very hot and no energy left. Thank goodness he came down on parkade floor, as now a rescue could take place. I motioned Maggie to come up and I gently led him toward Maggie, so he would be between both of us. I slipped my table cloth over him but the feisty guy wriggled out of it and Maggie just quickly threw hers on him and picked him up and put him in box. :girlluv:

I phoned Peter and security and Patti, our go to girl ,who examines them

I am pretty rattled by now and as Margie and were getting set to drive out of parkade with him and take him to Clinical science, Maggie reminded me , I still had the screen to keep sun out, on my front window :sunno: :sunno:

To make a longer story shooter, he was examined. he is very small and a bit thin but healthy. So Peter released him on roof below nest box. ( there is about a half inch of water covering roof completes from storm.)

Peter will fill you on the rest. I left him with Elaine and 2 toner people there.

Well as you have seen from earlier reports, it has been a busy day or two. Last night Elaine and I spend the night on the roof of the parkade watching our young fellow. We met some people up there who had been there for several days observing. They brought us a nice surprise. I took a picture and as I don't know how to do that yet, Bev will post it tonight. We have to thank these people as this will help us this year and in future years as you will see from the picture.

We had a relatively quiet start to the evening after all the fun during the day. The youngster was on CS on the lower roof where I had left him. Some food was brought in and put on a pillar and of course Chase went and started to eat it. Well, the little guy cat walked over and flopped on the pillar and the food and Chase flew off. So the youngster finally got some food. It was kind of funny to see the little guy taking food away from Chase.

The little guy (we are going to have to name him) stayed on the pillar for most of the night until Mom did a fly by. He started moving around and as the top of the pillar is not that big, he slipped and off he flew towards CP. Chase flew off with him but the youngster turned around and landed on the lower level of MAZ. He stayed there for a while and then took off towards CP as mom had food on one of the ledges. He flew all the way over and did not make the landing flew around CP and over to Windsor Park. We could not see where he landed, but he took off again towards the back of CP and we lost sight of him again. I ran around the building while Elaine watched in case he came out again. He was hard to spot but I found him on the 10th level of CP on one of the ledges. JEAN who lives in Windsor Park verified this as she could see him from her balcony. She kept and eye on him and saw him again this morning. As it was starting to get dark, Elaine and I called it a night.

Thanks for the report, Peter. It sure sounds as if the little guy is getting some good flying jaunts in, and I'm sure his landing skills will get better soon (it sounds as if he's getting lots of practice).

I had a smile on my face when I read the following:

"Some food was brought in and put on a pillar and of course Chase went and started to eat it. Well, the little guy cat walked over and flopped on the pillar and the food and Chase flew off. So the youngster finally got some food. It was kind of funny to see the little guy taking food away from Chase."

Bev just called as she was down there early this morning. Jean said the youngster was still on the ledge this morning. Thanks Jean, I know the early rising is not your favorite thing. The rest of this post may sound a bit crazy as I think Bev is starting to translate falcon talk. She's been doing this too long, me thinks. She advised that Chase went to get the food that Radison had left on the ledge at CP the night before. Radison flew over and gave him supreme and grabbed the food and flew around and put it on another ledge. Every time Radison goes out hunting, Chase just follows her and Bev said that it almost looked like she gave him supreme and told him to stay put and "babysit" while she got some food. Bev was sure that this is what was going on, probably because she is used to doing it with me.

Radison took off again to go hunting. She came back with a big pigeon and put it on the top of the extension building. She then went around back to show the youngster where it was. The youngster followed her around, flying very well and landed on top of the building by the pigeon. Radison flew up and watched to make sure Chase was not going to try and steal his food. Bev said she had nattered at him and just like a little kid Chase started talking back, but apparently, he got the message and he didn't go near the youngster. Bev said it was like a mom scolding her child, him starting to talk back and them she had the final say and thats the way it was going to be "or else". I think Bev has been around these falcons way too long or the sun is really getting to her. In any event, youngster has been fed and for the time being all is well with the world.

Bev just called and advised that she got a picture of the young fellow which she will post later. She is excited as he has a full crop and she hasn't seen him with a full crop for a while.
