The chicks were returned to the nest at 1:43 p.m. local time. Moments earlier, a parent landed and took off again very fast. The chicks settled down in the corner.

Here's a slideshow that starts about 1:15 p.m. Notice that by the 3rd image, I included my computer's clock in lower right (just deduct 2 hrs for MDT). While the kids were being banded Mom was in and out, in and out, but I only captured when she was "in." Once the kids were replaced back into the box, Mom was back on the wrung within 2 minutes (see shadow on last shot). Sorry for any duplicates that Alison caught.

I am just so happy here. 4 chicks would never have made it but these 2 are being fed enough

It's so good to see these two chubby chicks in the nest box! I'm so glad that everything seems to have worked out for the best here.

I got an e-mail from Gord. 2 beautiful ,very fat males were banded. He was not present but will get me the band numbers so I can post. They still had some flat flies or mites in ear area and under wing but were dusted for this. It appears it is Franklin gull and tern , they have been dining on.

the 2 siblings are thriving and will be hacked along North Sask , on a peregrine cliff, about 3 miles from Genesse. Gord said with it being so close to Genesse wet lands, they will probably meet up with their siblings.

I know some of you do not like hacking, but this is what is about. Trying to get them back on the cliffs.

I am just elated .

I'm curious to know whether there are any stats on how well hacked chicks do when it comes to hunting compared to chicks taught by parents. Maybe Gord could answer this ?

Found an interesting study on this. It seems that release timed according to sex and amount of food provided after fledging are two critical factors.

There's lots of data out there on the internet, evelyn. You may enjoy a Google search for something like "peregrine falcon hacking." :thumbup Gord has written many papers, some of which I've come across while researching online, although I don't remember if any were specifically about hacking. Anyway you will find lots of interesting and educational stuff. Happy reading!

Thanks, Susan :) I just added one study i found to my post above. And now i wonder how many falcon chicks are hacked in Alberta each year and if Gord has the stats.

Curiosity will kill this peregrine watcher from all the reading :egg7:

Just in case Gord is too busy to get back with you . . . Another Google search: "peregrine falcon hacking Alberta"

I know what you mean by all the reading. I've spent hours and hours, but the learning is the fun part.

I emailed the canadian peregrine foundation and they said that there's a "good chance of success" but only if the site is monitored after release, food is augmented until the fledglings are hunting well enough on their own AND if there's a fledge watch.

Hi, I'm new to this site. I am happy the decision was made to help out here and I was wondering if there was mention as to whether the two siblings were male or female?
