Hello from Montreal,

here's the latest news with Roger Spirit, Algo and Polly.

If everything goes well, it's this week that we'll know if
there's any new born with Roger and Spirit. We're keeping
are fingers crossed.

As for Polly and Algo the juvenile is already 20 days old

http://tinyurl.com/79pkocl

He's well feed and he's healthy so far.Unfortunately there
will be no banding done at the Turcot interchange this
year. Since these falcons are under high surveillance
nothing will be done to stress them.

Shirley has not been seen since Sunday May the 13.

As for the banding with Roger and Spirit no decision
has been taken so far.

You can see the videos that I took since the 20 of May
here:

Hope to come back to you with good news from Roger
and Spirit.

Bye,

Richard D.

Thanks for that update, Rick, on the nests in Montreal. Can't wait to hear if Roger and Spirit have some chicks. :loveheart:

It is good that Shirley has moved on, but I sometimes wonder about the mating of brother & sister and if that is good for a species. :egg16:

Hello,

here's an update from Montreal.

When I went to see Roger and Spirit Wednesday morning
at the St-Joseph Oratory and I've noticed that they were
not at the nesting spot where I saw them before.

They seem to have move to another location on the west
side of the building.

At the present time I don't know what exactly happen
but I will find more details in the weeks to come.

Here are some videos I've made that day:

Thank you Rick!

Nice videos-the leap in the last one was 'cool' ...

Do you think they lost their clutch this year?

Last Friday I went to see how the juvenile was
doing at the Turcot interchange.

Here are some videos of the little one being fed by
Algo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKOasPYMHa0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9_EkijkdHc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POO61f9hMmM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lvokUqA4VM

And one of Algo watching over the nest after he's
done is duty.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zV2RebKZK0M

So far when it's the main meal, the juvenile gets
half of a pigeon.

I was there only for a short period.

I've also went to the Oratory and there was no sign of either
Roger or Spirit at the nesting spot where I saw them
on May 23 but Spirit pass by for a couple of seconds but not
long enough for me to take a picture.

I was there only a couple of minutes, I'll go again this week
when I have the chance.

As for your question Beth, if there's no other sign of nesting,
then I'll guess there won't be any juveniles from them
this year. :-(

Algo,Polly and the little one will keep us busy in the
weeks to come and before I forget, Shirley is
still showing up once in a wild...

As for your concern Susan about the mating of brother & sister
and if that is good for a species, our specialist here told us
that it should be a problem...

At least we know this year there's no chance of a nesting
couple from Algo and Polly siblings since there's only
one.

Bye,

Richard D.

Thank you for this latest report and the videos.

Do I understand correctly that your specialist thinks it is a problem for siblings to mate?

:egg11: Polly got a few good bites in first, didn't she? Her chick must be self-feeding now. :egg 19:

I am deeply saddened by this. I hope there will be an update. Not fair. Wanted to see Polly nest do well.

Hello,

...... :-(

I received an e-mail last Wednesday telling me there was
a problem at Turcot, no signs of the juvenile.

I went for a quick visit at the end of the day to
see one off the adult staring at the nest and
no sign of life at the nest. But these are
situations that we've seen before so I was
not exactly sure that something happen
to the juvenile.

When I arrived Thursday morning at 6h00 am Polly
was at the nest just staring inside and out for more
then a hour but at that point I knew something was
wrong, the juvenile should have been already up and
asking for food.

When Polly move I finally saw part of the juvenile
not moving not far from the edge of the nest.

Polly gave the impression that she didn't know why
the juvenile was not giving any sign of life.

You can see a photo here:

https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1170 ... 6421445186

After talking with a friend of mine who saw the juvenile
Monday, chances are that he died of natural causes.

Like I wrote on F.B. I'm waiting for more details.

Since this is a natural nest, the falcon have chosen
themselves to nest there without any human intervention,
it' s possible that we never know what happen.

The people who were hired to keep an eye on him
were supposed to intervene just in case of a problem
with the workers and, or the work that needed to be
done to the structure.

If the falcons would have use the nest box,
it would have been a different story.

When Polly arrived at the nest, you can see
that she's touching the juvenile with one
of here feet here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUaZWXhCT4Q

You can see her lying next to the juvenile here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3_yomLkQkU

Has for Roger and Spirit the latest news
is telling me also that's the end of there
nesting season.

So unfortunately...it's not a good year for either
couple of Roger and Spirit or Algo and Polly. :-(

What can I say.....life goes on...I hope things get
better with both family next year.

Richard D.

I am so sorry, Rick. Thank you for your videos and update on the two nests in Montreal. As others have said, it is heartbreaking to watch Polly's reaction. :cryinggirl:
