I sure am sorry to learn that Polly's chick has died. I guess it would have to be natural causes of some kind, unless it was shot. I hope that it didn't suffer. Poor Polly. :egg15:

I never did understand, was it a problem or not that they were siblings?

If I were to guess at a cause, it would probably be trichomoniasis.

David Bird bird who is our specialist with the peregrine falcons
told us it was not a problem.

It's also my opinion....when I saw the juvenile on May 30,
when Polly arrived with a meal he grab it from her:

and here you can see him grabing the pigeon that Polly
just prepared for diner:

Basically he didn't have problem feeding himself when
they brought him a meal, he was 30 days old at that
time.

After taking with a friend of mine who also took some
pictures and videos of the family, he told me that the
last time he saw him eat, it was either Polly or Algo that
was feeding him.

That was days after me.

June 4:

and this his the last video where we see him alive:

I recall in 2010 we had a similar problem with the female
juvenile (Eve) who died a couple of days after she
was sent to the veterinarian. But it was from a certain
type of hepatitis combine with pneumonia.

Also 4 juveniles from the nest box of Champlain Bridge died
that year from trichomoniasis

But in both case they were younger then the juvenile
of Algo and Polly.

But it can be something else also...until the juvenile
his sent to the veterinarian for an autopsy we
can only speculate on the cause of death and
unfortunately there's no guaranties that it will
be done.

I will post more videos taken that day later on,
you can see them here:

I don't post all of my videos on F.B.

Thanks, Rick, for keeping us informed. If you learn that the chick has been picked up and taken for a necropsy, please let us know.

In Brussels (Belgium) the pair on the cathedral is a mother and her son. They have now had two successful clutches, so apparently it is not a problem.
Doesn't mean it wouldn't be much better for the species if such pairings did not occur of course.

That memorial video for Polly & Algo's chick brings tears to my eyes. We were so excited when this little chick arrived, and its passing leaves a hole in my heart. :cryinggirl:

I am just really emotional here. I feel badly for Polly and mate and for Rick. I feel for the chick that did not get a chance to feel the air under its wings.

This gets to me more and more. I thought I was getting better but this one for some reason, I am finding hard. I guess because we watched Polly and I am just pulling for her so much. I hope they nest in a box next year and I also hope they retrieve this little one so they know what happened. the poor parents , having to go there every day.

thank-you Rick for bringing us so much joy in your posts. Keep your eyes to the skies and you will be rewarded.

I am so very sorry to find out that Polly and Algo's chick did not survive. What a beautiful little chick - I wonder what happened. According to the blog it was thought to be a virus or other illness. A very sad year for the Montreal peregrines.

Some better news from the site; the nest box and cams will be back on the tower before September.

Good news

Finally some good news for our peregrines! The work on the tower has been completely finished. We will proceed with the reinstallation of the nest box and cameras as soon as possible, in anticipation of the return of Spirit and Roger in 2013. They have already been seen on their usual perches, and one can see that they have begun painting the new roofs white . . .
