Hello all,
Greetings from the world's messiest falcon nest box.
The Red Deer external cam was out for a couple of days (it's back now!), but I am happy to pass on good news from the Red Deer fledge and cam watchers. All three of Nessa and Windsong's chicks have fledged successfully and are to be found flying around the platform area and upper tower or lazing around on the platform deck yelling for food (which the parents are now dropping off in interesting places on the tower). After keeping us all in suspense for days by her unwillingness to leave the box and join her "twin" brothers on the tower platform, Summer was sneaky and flew for the first time sometime in the last two days when the cam was down. Still tentative flights but they're all in the air!
For those not familiar with this nest, the Red Deer nest box is on top of a cell phone tower with restricted access even for biologists, so these chicks were not banded nor offically sexed. The early guesses from the watchers that Brad and Scott are male and their (younger but not-so-little) sibling Summer is female look to be pretty solid.
So one messy, messy next box full of leftovers (every night is wing night in Red Deer!) + two otherwise attentive parents + lots of seagull meals = three healthy fledges!
Now if they can only stay away from chimneys...
