No Ariane is a female. Unfortunately, in Italian "figlio" is usually used to mean child, irrespective of the sex but, because it's male in Italian, it's usually translated as "son". It's a common translation error made by Italians - I teach English and I'm often told "I've got 2 sons" adding, for example, "Their names are Maria and Luisa!" If you look at the posts on the Italian forum, you'll find "lei" is used in combination with Ariane's name and this is the female pronoun ("lui" is the male pronoun).

Hope this clears up the misunderstanding :egg13:

Thank you so much for clearing that up Warbler!
The name Ariane confused me too because that is usually a name for a girl. (At least it is in my country  )
Ariane looks very sleek sometimes, that too made us think it was a male bird.

This means that ALL the eggs in the peregrine nests we follow in the Rome area have hatched this year :hapdance: .

Parent feeding.

Afterwards, juvie arrives with prey, but she does not want to give the food up as she wants to feed the chicks herself, and she does.

The weather is really bad for new chicks today - that's why all the females are well down in the nests with the chicks kept firmly underneath. It's wet and windy :egg15: . However, if Aria and Vento's chicks keep eating as they are doing, there's no chance that they'll blow away, they'll be too heavy :egg13:

They were left quite a long time on their own yesterday, unfortunately, and the wind was colder than today, although it wasn't raining. The juvie tried to comfort them then, too. Apparently she fed them this morning at about 6.45 am. It's obvious that both parents are comfortable with her being there and feeding the little ones.

Sorry, I didn't pass that information on  .

Unfortunately, there's some bad news... :egg10: one of Alice and Virgilio's chicks has died and Alice disposed of the body, much to the horror of the new Italian forum members. I also saw a short video in which Alice pushed the two remaining chicks into the corner VERY unceremoniously :egg14:

Although it's hard to watch, this is nature, this is how peregrines live. I just hope that the other two survive and become strong healthy young falcons flying free.

There are a lot of comments about Alice and the dead chick on our forum. Several people have commented on Alice's behaviour this year. She seems to have very little patience with the chicks and literally rams food down their throats, often then finishing it off herself and plonking down on them in a very summary fashion. Several people have wondered if this treatment was the cause of death of the chick - they were fed not long before and it was fine.

Here is a short video by Sandrobico where you can clearly see a chick on its back and she does nothing to help it (we've seen similar scenes in the nests of Aria and Vento and Appio and Vergine and the parent birds have tried to help the chick in both cases): http://www.birdcam.it/forum/viewtopic.p ... &start=195

Another short video by Zwiersje, taken a couple of days before (11 April) is a good example of how she's treating the chicks this year. :egg18:

http://www.birdcam.it/forum/viewtopic.p ... &start=165

By the way, we're pretty sure that it's the same female as the last couple of years - she's enormous to start with and then there are other features that are the same.
