More News!!

I have just received another report that confirms that F&F are still in the area around Admiralty Towers and that they are nesting at the moment.

A recent e-mail from local resident Anne contains some very interesting information about F&F.

Anne has recently observed a Peregrine attack and force a White-bellied Sea-Eagle to ditch into the Brisbane River near Admiralty Towers. She describes the attack as vicious.

Attacks on other raptors by Peregrines are common but what is unusual here is that the Sea-Eagle was flying low enough to get itself into difficulties. Sea-Eagle often fly along the Brisbane River but they usually do so at heights where the Peregrines don’t regard them as a threat (and where most people don’t notice them).

This Sea-Eagle was having a really bad day. Once it ditched, it narrowly avoided being struck by a City-Cat ferry before it drifted out of sight. It reappeared after about 10 minutes and was flying low and slow before ditching a second time without any assistance from the local Peregrines. One can only assume that it was thoroughly exhausted by the experience: the Sea-Eagle’s ultimate fate is not known.

Anne’s report confirms that Frieda & Frodo are still around and that they are nesting (otherwise the attack on the Sea-Eagle would not have been pressed so hard).

O Mi Gosh! That certainly was a vicious attack on the Sea Eagle - no wonder Alcoa decided to resite S&H's box this year after all the bombing of their staff in previous years. Yes, I really hope Greg starts making some serious investigations with a view to resiting F&F's camera!!!

Yeah - me too PattiO - it sad that he was spotted ditching a second time into the river - I wish he could have at least landed on some land - gosh, it's hard to watch wildlife sometimes

The sea eagle is bigger than the peregrine!

The sexes are similar. Males are 70–80 cm (28–32 in) and weigh 1.8–3 kg (4–6.6 lb). Females are slightly larger, at 80–90 cm (32–36 in) and 2.5–4.5 kg (5.5–10 lb). The wingspan ranges from 1.8 to 2.2 m (6–7 ft).[4] They soar on thermals holding their wings in a 'V' shape, unlike other raptors who hold them horizontally.[5]

I sent a e-mail to John Grey last week about F&F...
He then sent a e-mail to Greg...

Hi John
Absolutely nothing on the Frodo front.

This is a bit unusual compared to other seasons. Me thinks that they might have moved –
perhaps all of the construction work in that part of town has thrown a spanner in the works.

Cheers,
Greg
