KALOAKULUA HAS FLEDGED!
She hopped on to a rock wall out of sight from the cam, jumped into the wind, and flew north. She may not set foot on land again for more than 3 years! Upon her return, our collaborators at Pacific Rim Conservation will hope to retrieve the geolocator attached to her band to determine where she has been.
Fly long and far, and may the fishing be fruitful!

She just doesn't look like she should be leaving yet. Stay safe sweetheart.

Early morning we saw 'Dad', a second adult and a juvenile on Sapsucker Pond. The juvenile landed in the same tree as Dad for a short time, then flew close to the second adult. This could be two parents and their offspring. Dad may well have bred successfully elsewhere this year. It would explain his great fishing efforts we have witnessed this season. Perhaps he was taking the fish away to young on a nest nearby. There are several ponds to the North of Sapsucker Woods, he could have established a new nest site after the loss of the nest on the pond at the Cornell Lab.

The juvenile Cormorant that was ringed on Puffin Island on June 28th about to take flight. This photo was taken on September 20th and shows that the feathers are in great condition. The Cormorant may now have made it's way down to the Glaslyn marshes and then the estuary where many gather on the beach at Morfa Harlech.

The plot thickens! Kaluakane has now constructed a nest in a spot we humans would not see as ideal. Will he convince Kaluahine of his choice? She should be back soon.

The Kauai Albatross Network (KAN) tell us Kaloakulua's male parent has settled down next to a propane tank in the yard the pair bred in last season. It's on the opposite side of the house. There were five birds on the property this morning, at least 3 of whom are male. One of the males is Mango's dad and another is a known successful nester. Other males are settling in much better locations for the cam. KAN will keep us posted!

Thanks to Hob Osterlund, founder of KAN for the report and great photograph.

The Bird Cams team were enjoying Thanksgiving last week and missed bringing you news from Kauai, sorry about that. But guess what! #AlbatrossCam Kaluahine has laid an egg! We think it was laid either November 26 or 27.

The Kauai Albatross Network inform us that the egg has been laid in the nest that male parent Kaluakane chose earlier in the week, so it is out of view of the camera, however there are other nesters in view of the cam. We should know later this month if any of the eggs are fertile.

Thanks to Hob Osterlund, founder of KAN for the report and great photograph.

More exciting news from Kauai! Mango’s parents, who featured in last season’s #AlbatrossCam, have built a nest and have an egg.

The nest is very close to the mango tree their offspring from earlier in the year used to sit under. The nest is situated at the base of a palm tree in a much better view for our camera.

Mango’s parents have been named Ko’olau (Dad) and Malumalu (Mom). Their names honor the area where they chose to nest and embody protection and courage.

Thanks once again to the awesome Kauai Albatross Network for the update and their founder Hob Osterlund for another great photograph.

Skomer and Skokholm puffins die after winter storms

Thousands of puffins usually found on islands off Pembrokeshire are believed to have died following last winter's storms.
Researchers believe the sea birds could not get enough fish to eat after prolonged gale force winds brought in huge Atlantic swells.

They estimate that 5,000 birds have died as a result, which is about 25% of the puffin colony mostly found on Skomer and Skokholm islands.
Breeding has also been affected........

Laysan Albatross on Kauai

Great news- all four albatross nests on the property on Kauai where our #AlbatrossCam is located have been confirmed fertile. Check out the video of the candling http://youtu.be/ilBP1GqOj4Q :leaves:

We are very excited to receive this news from Pacific Rim Conservation and the Kauai Albatross Network. A few more things have to come together to get the camera set up once again in the new year, but this is certainly a step in the right direction.......

PS: it's been one year to the day since last year's nestling Kaloakulua emerged from the egg...exciting times are ahead!
