Well, this is weird. I just started the video and it is not Bao and Mommy. Will investigate :furious:
Well, now it is. So if you don't get a cute panda cub frolicking with her mom, try again...

Fun thing about the video is, that I was watching it to at the same time last night. Bao Bao and her attacking from behind had me laugh at mom. She just lied there and pretended to be asleep.

She is adorable and when she decides to attack her mom, it is a riot! She is so determined.

From Cub Confidential

Image

“Mei Lun and Mei Huan both weigh 9.7 kilograms (21.4 pounds)! We've always said that as the cubs grew, aspects of their personalities would change, too. One personality trait that seems to have been passed around is who is the boldest. Originally, Mei Huan was the go-getter, while Mei Lun was a little more reserved. Times have changed now that they're a little over 6 months old. Mei Lun is the adventurous one while Mei Huan usually hangs back a bit. A perfect example is how Mei Lun was the first to conquer the climbing structures. But while Mei Lun may be more adventurous, Mei Huan is still the cub with gusto; when she gets into something, she's full force! She often appears to have the upper hand during wrestling matches with her sister.”

Image This update was written by giant panda keeper Nicole MacCorkle.

Bao Bao continues to grow steadily, and is becoming more active and inquisitive with each passing day. Therefore, keepers are maximizing this time while she is little and playful to lay the groundwork for future positive reinforcement training. Our adult pandas routinely participate in voluntary blood draws, blood pressure checks, ultrasounds and, when needed, radiographs. They also receive their preventive vaccinations in the training cage, all without anesthesia. Obviously, Bao Bao is not yet ready for such “grown up” behaviors now, but we are laying a foundation to build upon as we work toward our training goals for her.

We still go in with her each day, and often have to relocate her in the mornings as we try to get the indoor enclosures cleaned, and so that visitors can see her when the building opens. She is acclimating to our presence and the sound of our voices, and seems to be increasingly interested in what we are doing around her. Now is the time to engage her, and to work on her responding to us and moving in our direction when we call her name, so that someday soon, she will be able to shift on and off exhibit like her parents do. Bao Bao has also sampled some dilute apple juice, and cooked sweet potato, which will later be used as training rewards.

At first our training goals will be simple, like shifting when called, and climbing onto the scale to be weighed (which she seems to have already mastered, at least with the small cub scale!) We are beginning to work on things like target training, which will lead into more advanced husbandry behaviors. If Bao Bao is anything like her parents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, and her big brother Tai Shan, and is eager to train, then the sky is the limit!

Our panda keepers gave Mei Lun and Mei Huan a bucket full of snow to play with. At first they were hesitant, but soon they realized how much fun they could have playing in the snow!
What is this stuff?

It sure does taste good!

It's delicious!

Can I go inside?

Mei Lun, I was in here first!

I think I like this snow stuff.

Okay, I LOVE SNOW!

"Mei Lun and Mei Huan are achieving new milestones every day! Megan Wilson, PhD, Assistant Curator of Mammals, has this panda cub milestone to share with Cub Confidential:

“It’s another first for Mei Lun and Mei Huan! On Saturday, the cubs readily shifted into Dayroom 2 with Lun Lun. You may recall that the cubs have been in this dayroom, but in the past they’ve needed a bit of assistance getting there. Saturday, though, they walked out there all on their own. And it only took about 10 minutes, which is pretty fast for young, playful panda cubs. I imagine they encountered some new sights and smells on their journey. We’ll continue to switch it up for Lun and the cubs by providing them with a different dayroom on different days. Before we know it, it will be time for their big adventure in one of the outdoor habitats!”

Thanks, Megan. We can’t wait to see the girls in an outdoor exhibit!"

"The Coveted Cub Spot" From
Image

Image

Image

Mei Lun and Mei Huan really can’t get enough of their “corner office” on top of the climbing structure. The spot is snug enough to fit one fluffy cub. What happens if someone gets there before the other? Shauna Dankberg, Keeper I, has this update for Cub Confidential:

“The latest battle for the coveted cub spot was a big one. The cubs really seemed to be playing more roughly than I have usually seen them do. This is completely normal and expected; as they get older and stronger, their bouts with each other and with Lun Lun will become gradually rougher. This is all part of the learning process in becoming self-sufficient adult giant pandas. The battle for the spot involved quite a bit of paw-biting and swatting from each cub. It lasted probably about five minutes, and in the end, Mei Lun came out the victor, although it didn't really seem to faze Mei Huan as they both quickly fell asleep.”

Thanks, Shauna!

C.c. Anastasia Walters posted this picture on the EAGLE PEEPS FB page with this comment. Cracked me up! :laugh

"Ohhhh I am so disappointed with Princess Bao Bao....She is giving a bad example to all Panda cubs. If she wants to leave the "den" quickly she needs to get a respectable job. Hahahaha"

From Zoo Atlanta.

"China departure date adjusted for Xi Lan and Po
Lun Lun’s and Yang Yang’s second and third offspring will now depart on May 12
Image

Giant pandas Xi Lan, 5, and Po, 3, are now scheduled to depart for China on Monday, May 12, 2014, five days later than originally planned, as a result of logistical changes in their travel arrangements.

The bears’ upcoming trip is one of the most anticipated milestones in the life of a U.S.-born giant panda. Their older brother, Mei Lan, made the voyage in 2010 and now resides at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, which will also be Xi Lan’s and Po’s new home.

Fans are encouraged to visit the Zoo to wish Xi Lan and Po well on their new adventure. The morning hours are best for seeing both Xi Lan and Po on exhibit, as temperatures are cool enough for giant pandas to be outdoors. Once temperatures warm up, either Xi Lan or Po will be on exhibit in one of the interior dayrooms.

The youngest members of Lun Lun’s and Yang Yang’s family, twin cubs Mei Lun and Mei Huan, are on exhibit daily. "
